  29. It is claimed that Google tailor your search results according to your your previous choices from your search history, and also possibly the history of pages you have visited which include content from Google. If you rarely delete cookies etc and don’t often turn off your router, Google (among others) may have a continuous record of much of your web activity for months or years, and offer you search results designed to interest you based upon your previous choices. If you have access to multiple accounts, you could try logging in as someone else to see if that gives different results.

The results posted in comments might change over a 24 hour cycle, because Google probably displays different results in different countries.

A Delicate Truth, by John le Carré – review

    Alan Judd 4 May 2013

A Delicate Truth John Le Carré
    Viking, pp.309, £18.99, ISBN: 9780670922790

    [..]
A Delicate Truth is unusual in the Le Carré canon in that it doesn’t explicitly feature MI6 or the other intelligence services. They have an off-stage presence but the real action involves Toby Bell, a sympathetic and conscientious Foreign Office official who uncovers corruption, cover-up and criminal deceit in the heart of Whitehall. In his dramatisation of the secret blurring of public and private interests, highlighting relentless ambition and moral cowardice, Le Carré depicts the Deep State — the inner core of the establishment — as the real enemy of institutional and individual decency. One character in particular embodies all that arouses his Dickensian indignation — ‘your normal, rootless, amoral, plausible, half-educated, nicely-spoken frozen adolescent in a bespoke suit, with an unappeasable craving for money, power and respect, regardless of where he got them from’. We all know this man; he thrives where power lies.

Le Carré’s context is specifically New Labour and the War on Terror. A junior Foreign Office minister goes privateering on the side without the knowledge of Toby, his private secretary. The minister’s secret partner in crime is the plausible self-seeker described above, representing an American security outfit called Ethical Outcomes. Despite the New Labour context, it is of course impossible not to imagine this as an exaggerated version of Dr Liam Fox and his friend Adam Werritty, while Ethical Outcomes inevitably recalls the South African security company Executive Outcomes.

  37. Same as first poster. And still no clue as to where Werritty has gone. I note that Fox is likely to make a comeback soon, so perhaps an enterprising journalist can ask the Big Question:

“Where the fuck is Adam Werritty?”

Israel, I presume. Returned to sender.

I too love le Carre’s “A Delicate Truth”, and in fact much of his oeuvre in this century. I think the never-ending Cold War restricted him towards the end, but now its end has freed him and focussed him on one enemy – the Deep State in the West. He is just so angry and so funny and so withering.

An old man in a magnificent hurry.

Xstrata’s Mick Davis gives £500,000 to Conservatives
One of Britain’s richest businessmen known as “Mick The Miner” has emerged as the Conservatives’ biggest donor, giving £500,000 to the party so far this year

    15 May 2013

Mick Davis gave the cash weeks before it emerged that he had quit British mining company Xstrata with nearly £75million after it was bought by commodity trader Glencore.

Mr Davis was one of a handful of businessmen who were funding a not for profit organisation run by Adam Werritty, which led to the resignation of former defence secretary Liam Fox in 2011.

South African-born Mr Davis has previously donated £150,000 to the Tories in 2010/11 and £7,500 to Education Secretary Michael Gove.

Mr Davis’s donation was matched by May Makhzoumi, the wife of Fouad Makhzoumi, a Lebanese entrepreneur who was caught up in the scandal that toppled former Tory minister Jonathan Aitken in the mid-1990s, who also gave £500,000 to the Tories.

Other prominent donors to the Tories in the first three months of the year include JCB Research which gave £57,500, and hedge fund tycoon Michael Farmer who gave £250,000.

  47. The reference to Lord Fairfax (of Cameron) above is rather interesting. Apart from his laudable interest in riding motorcycles across Russia, he is a member of the SCF Group (Sovcomflot) Executive Board, and is apparently the Senior Risk Strategy Officer.

As a 100% (Russian -K) government-owned company with global presence, Sovcomflot board of directors is usually headed by executives from the Presidential Administration of Russia. In July 2007 Igor Shuvalov, aide to Vladimir Putin, long-time chairman of the board, was replaced by Sergey Naryshkin, chief of staff of Presidential Administration. Other directors are: Andrey Kostin (Vneshtorgbank), Yury Medvedev, Alexander Misharin, Gleb Nikitin, Charles E. Ryan (of Deutsche Bank), Aleksey Sokolov, Elena Titova (Morgan Stanley), Alexander Tikhonov, Sergey Frank (chief executive).

Sergey Frank controls the operations as CEO since October 2004. The Management Board also includes Sergey Burima (operations), Nicholas Fairfax (London operations), Andrey Khlunev (accounting), Nikolay Kolesnikov (finance), Aleksandr Kurtynin (audit), Callum Ludgate (charter and gas), Vladimir Mednikov (law), Sergey Popravklo (Cyprus operations).
    (Wiki)

Sovcomflot specialises in oil and LNG transportation.

    Question

    Asked by Lord Ashcroft

To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether they have made representations to the BBC regarding the neutrality of its news coverage.[HL93]

Lord Gardiner of Kimble: There have been no representations or recent discussions with the BBC concerning the neutrality of its news output.

The BBC is required to deliver duly impartial news by the Royal Charter and Agreement, and the BBC Trust is committed to making sure that the BBC fulfils this obligation. One of the ways the trust does this is through a rolling programme of impartiality reviews looking at different aspects of the BBC’s output. The trust is currently carrying out an impartiality review, looking at the BBC’s breadth of opinion, which is set to be published in July.

Now, now, that is prying into the upcoming civil partnership party, that Tories are far too busy pushing forward, much to the dismay of all the “swivel eyed loons”, and other grass root supporters, less said about most of the back benches.

Liam will always luv Adam (they have carved a heart with “Liam hearts Adam” inscribed int it, on the trunk of the tree they used to enjoy its shade. Regardless of this all; they share so much and have so much in common, and both like Mat Gould and his causes.

The intriguing question remaining is what will happen to the faghag (the common expression among the fraternity of the homosexuals, don’t harangue at me) currently involved in sort of another civil partnership with Liam?

Could we hear it all from a woman scorned? Or will Liam do lots more visiting to mid east to raise the funds necessary to buy her off?

Perhaps he has changed his first name and has gone into the instant loans business.

Clearly the Google algorithm has something in it which reflects past searching behaviour – it helps those who believe in conspiracy theories to find them. Perhaps they should concentrate on paying their taxes instead.

    April Showers

Perhaps he was just Liam Fox’s bag carrier – and since he has been dropped by his master he has just opted for the quiet life?

  81. RD I think the evidence (available in the MSM at the time) confirms that Werritty was acting as a good deal more than a bag carrier, and Fox was forced to acknowledge this. If he has now been driven into hiding, that’s fine. If he was something undercover, he’s been well and truly blown. Excellent.

But where is he? We wish to assure ourselves that he is in good health, getting his mail, and has not fallen unfortunately out of a window on account of his no doubt wholly innocent activities at two Herzliya conferences.

  82. Faintly surprising that what doesn’t show up on the Google history is Lord Astor. See:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/8843804/Second-Defence-Minister-faces-questions-over-links-with-Liam-Foxs-best-man.html

That’s Cameron’s father-in-law, btw. And he’s intensely relaxed about taxes, RD, so why not the rest of us?

  83. So, programmers to the fore. Unless Liam’s lover has changed his facial appearance, he should be visible somewhere.

We need to write a programme that accesses each and every cctv camera there is, develop a biometric close resemblance electronic picture and a rapid search code that acts like a scanner, switching from camera to camera in a jiffy, comparing like is like pictures globally with the original.

Add to that something that looks for slight modulations in nose and cheek structures and look for travel pattern of these faces, log them and compare to other important events.

I’m unable to programme, but some clever Jack could probably achieve this without much being noticed.

What did I hear yesterday… Julian Assange has evidence of spooks chatting about him, about being ‘fitted up’ and that they don’t think that his vindication would free him from the US urge to frame him.

There used to be people working for Governments who had principles and loyalty, who seen more in our laws than just a tool and instrument to keep people down.
So what would austerity Britain do with an incarcerated Australian Senator who has been set up to be set upon?

Just saying, sorry for this O/T, but acute story.

Ah, all is well at GCHQ then.

“RD I think the evidence (available in the MSM at the time) confirms that Werritty was acting as a good deal more than a bag carrier, and Fox was forced to acknowledge this.”

Perhaps it might be more accurate to describe Werrity as an agent of Fox who could then act on his behalf outside the ministerial rules – but I am pretty sure that if it could have been demonstrated that if Werritty was acting as anything other than his master’s voice then Fox would have cut him adrift rather than resigned.

  89. Perhaps it might be more accurate to describe Werrity as an agent of Fox who could then act on his behalf outside the ministerial rules…

I’ll buy that, partly. Nevertheless, the impression was strongly promoted that Werritty was official. Tetra believed, or claimed to believe this, when the Boulter meeting surfaced:

    Statement from Tetra Strategy

Tetra Strategy was retained in 2010 to provide litigation PR assistance to the Porton Group in connection with its ongoing High Court claim in England against 3M. The case concerned the development of new MRSA testing technology developed by the MoD. Tetra introduced its client to Adam Werritty in March 2011, who was widely believed at the time to be an official adviser to Dr Liam Fox. The purpose of the introduction was to brief the MoD on the litigation. The suggestion by the Guardian that Tetra was paid to arrange a “secretive” meeting with Dr Fox is not true and is expressly denied. Tetra is referring this matter to the PCC.”

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2011/oct/09/liam-fox-meeting-lobbyists-werritty-boulter

And I don’t think that enabling Fox to act ‘unconstitutionally’ was quite the whole picture.

Follow the money. Who paid for all this? Hedge fund managers with a strong interest in Israeli affairs. (Not Fox. Not even Fox’s expenses). The same people who are currently funding Osborne, incidentally. These people made their money by insuring a profitable return on any investment. They’re already bankrolling the Tories in general (and are generous supporters of individuals like Osborne. In general terms, this is quite sufficient. But they had a special interest in having Werritty – a thicko “business consultant” with no experience of defence and a Walter Mitty complex, who would not have rated anywhere in a contest for SPADs – on board with the defence secretary. Enough to pay for it. Why? For past favours received? For favours yet to come? Or for an obedient mouth next to Fox’s ear?

I know why Fox wanted him. Friendship, or more. But I still don’t know why anyone wanted to pay for Fox to have him.

    Anyway, where is he?

  90. The Telegraph (☠) is interesting on the subject of Sri Lanka:
