    Tom Watson MP gives his take on the phone hacking trials:

    “At prime minister’s questions today he claimed that all the difficult questions had been covered at the Leveson inquiry.

    Yet at the inquiry, Cameron claimed that in 2009, when the Guardian first reported that phone hacking at the News of the World may have gone further than a single rogue reporter, Coulson said he knew nothing about it – repeating an assurance made on taking the job with the Conservatives. Under oath, Cameron said: “I was reliant on his word but I was also reliant on the fact that the Press Complaints Commission had accepted his word, the select committee had accepted his word, the police had accepted his word, the Crown Prosecution Service had accepted his word.”

    But at that point in 2009, Coulson had not been interviewed by the police, the CPS or a select committee on the subject, and the PCC never interviewed Coulson personally. The prime minister gave an explanation which was – wholly, demonstrably and in detail – false.”

    What have I just said?

    Anyway I thought your objection to my being on the planet was my posting of John Pilger’s articles, the treatment of the boat people and of the Australian Aboriginal people.

    Here’s a good one before I go out for the evening.

    It’s about another phony Tony. Just like BLiar who fixed it for Euan at Yale

    The best defence money can buy, paid up witnesses, a bent PM, pocket coppers, shit prosecutors. They’ve got the lot. Power trumps justice in the law. Again.

    The mafia boss flies into town this weekend to reassure the mob. Sit tight, pay offs promised will be honoured. Old man Murdoch was even ringing one of the scum whilst on C4 news.

    What is required for people to stop taking this s**t seriously?

    Someone clever will have to explain to me – very slowly – how on earth Rebecca was found innocent. Still not getting it. It’s like that banana thing with David MIllipede. I never had the vaguest clue why anyone might think this was somehow a ‘gaffe’ or ‘important’. People did try to explain, talking about media image and whotnot, but I remain none the wiser. Man eats banana, who cares? Clearly I’m not media savvy. Which is perhaps why I haven’t the vaguest idea how Brooks could be found innocent. She looks guilty as all hell to me.

    I did think about Ali War Crimes Campbell and Tony Headcase Blair when Ed made that comment. McBride is small beer in the scheme of things, probably why that idiot Cameron referenced him in the first place, an easy target. God Cameron is an idiot, saying prejudicial stuff now apparently. I shake my head in amazement that this clown is PM.

  • OldMark

    ‘Someone clever will have to explain to me – very slowly – how on earth Rebecca was found innocent.’

    Brendan- our jury system periodically throws up perverse judgments in high profile cases; I’m old enough to remember the acquittals of Jeremy Thorpe, Jeffrey Archer, and Ken Dodd. In the first two instances the judge’s summing up was clearly a factor in the result, in the third KD simply charmed the pants off the jury.

    In this case I can’t recall any detailed reporting of the judge’s summing up of the case- a curious omission on the part of our supposedly vigilant MSM. It is also claimed that Rebecca ‘played a blinder’ under cross examination from the prosecution- or at least that she made a better impression than Coulson did. I must assume therefore, in the absence of detailed reports of the summing up, that the findings of the jury derive mainly from Rebecca’s performance under cross examination (aided no doubt by the best defence counsel money can buy, courtesy of old Rupe), and not from any eccentric interventions by the presiding judge.

    The judge’s summing up in the Thorpe case did of course elicit this wonderful pastiche from the great Peter Cook; after 35 years it still has me laughing out loud-

    Brendan “I shake my head in amazement that this clown is PM.”. It was a pretty-boy contest. I knew he was going to be party leader as soon as I saw the faces of him and the other candidates. Plus he had “Team Cameron’s Big Jewish Backers” behind him as the Jewish Chronicle puts it.

    http://website.thejc.com/home.aspx?AId=46698&ATypeId=1&search=true2&srchstr=++%22big+jewish+backers+%22&srchtxt=0&srchhead=1&srchauthor=0&srchsandp=0&scsrch=0

    Once you’re PM – you have enormous patronage. Its easy after that. Blair even abolished Cabinet government – no votes, just whatever Tony wanted. He even got people to vote for a murderous invasion because their careers would have been on line otherwise. And those are so important to them.

  • Jemand

    Well my comment re Rebekah Brooks went up in a plume of smoke as my browser crashed. So I will only present the abridged version here.

    The planned acquittal of Rebekah Brooks might have depended on having the right charges laid. That is to say, they appeared to be relevant and serious but were ultimately flawed and provided the defence a significant, if not obvious, advantage.

    So an acquittal, upon careful examination, might be proven to have been the correct and proper outcome. And because the charges defended are so similar to other charges that could have and should have been laid to ensure a successful prosecution, she cannot be prosecuted for them because of double jeopardy provisions.

    So that’s how you wiggle out of it. Strategic legal defence paid for by Rupert Murdoch.

    When all the loose ends are eventually tied up, do not be surprised to see the refloating of the News of the World, like a vessel having been earlier scuttled to destroy evidence, to grace your newsagent stands once again. If you do a check of corporate registrations, there should be some evidence of continued ownership of the paper’s name/masthead by NewsCorp.

    Who knows, maybe the now vindicated Rebekah Brooks will be back in business as editor-in-chief of an exciting new version of an old publication.

  • Tom

    “In this case I can’t recall any detailed reporting of the judge’s summing up of the case- a curious omission on the part of our supposedly vigilant MSM.”

    I noticed that too. Something very fishy about the almost complete lack of reporting of the case in the past three months – as though the media didn’t want people to know the strength of the case against Rebekah Brooks.

    “Chilcot was told by former cabinet secretary Sir Gus O’Donnell in 2011 that there was no way the notes or records of correspondence between Bush and Blair could be published in their entirety, even with redactions.

    The deal means the report may now be published by the end of the year after senior politicians, including David Cameron and Nick Clegg, demanded a speedier resolution. Blair this week repeated denials that he was responsible for the blockage and Whitehall sources said the main source of objections was the US.”

    http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/may/29/chilcot-inquiry-accused-of-whitewash-over-blair-and-bush-letters

    Andy: I guess we’ll all be able read the report (unredacted in spite of National Security concerns) later this year, and this guy wants to get ahead of the curve.

  • Jemand

    Old Mary, you know absolutely nothing of those things you keep posting about. For you it’s as simple as one homogenous side versus another homogenous side with you pouring petrol on the flames of public discussion to maintain the raging fires that fascinate you. You are part of the problem, not the solution.

    PS – You are also not Pilger’s publisher, so quit the act.

    As well as the Downing Street criminals there are those in Ukraine. The Christian Vladimir Putin has done everything to de-escalate tensions in the Donbass region.

    “Vladimir Putin’s request is not ‘correction work’ but a positive signal to Western countries, says Ilyas Umakhanov, deputy speaker of the Federation Council.

    “Moreover, I hope that our Western partners will receive these positive signals and stop inventing more scary stories [about Russia] and abandon the policy of whitening radical groups in Ukraine,” he added, “Russia has confirmed its status of a great power, which defines its political course independently.””

    Of course I’m sick of having to say none of this ever makes it onto MSM in the UK.

    Israeli forces shoot and injure Palestinian near Hebron
    25/06/2014 21:53

    HEBRON (Ma’an) — A Palestinian teenager was shot and injured by Israeli forces during clashes in Kharsa south of Hebron.

    Younis al-Rjoub, 18, was shot in the abdomen and taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, medical sources said.

    Palestinian shot Friday succumbs to wounds
    (updated) 25/06/2014

    RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Mustafa Husni Aslan, 22, was pronounced dead from wounds he sustained during clashes with Israeli soldiers in Qalandiya refugee camp on Friday, medical sources said.

    Aslan was shot in the head and then moved Ramallah Public Hospital before being moved to Hadassah hospital in Ein Karem upon his family’s request.

    Aslan was previously declared “clinically dead” Friday, before he was pronounced dead Wednesday.

    He was initially pronounced dead on Friday, the day he was shot, which caused shock and confusion among people in Qalandiya refugee camp.

    It later became clear, however, that he had not passed away at that time.

    The funeral of Aslan will take place Thursday.

    I suspect, John Goss, that the Russians were so quick to act and effective in their excision of Crimea and Eastern Ukraine because they had the plan up on the board for the last ten years waiting for the right time to strike. They knew that the Ukraine would drift West but they were not prepared to let the kids and furniture go in the divorce.

  • Ben-LA PACQUTE LO ES TODO

    “Old Mary, you know absolutely nothing of those things you keep posting about”

    My spouse just completed her jury duty in a criminal trial. It was made unnecessarily complex because the judge had to CYA with ridiculously murky jury instructions. The second day of deliberations I was waiting in the hall and the prosecutor was having a rather loud conversation with the alleged victim. I was 30 feet away but I heard him say clearly”

    “Juries are crazy and stupid. If I’m lucky I’ll get 2-3 smart jurors, blah, blah blah.” i think he smelled his own shite and was preparing her for an unhappy verdict.

    When they reached their conclusions in court, I could tell the judge was pleased with their intelligent and just decision. I have found every jury I’ve served on had smart folks with common sense and good judgement.

    I caught the prosecutor by the collar before the jury returned and told him i thought he was an asshole, for saying such a disrespectful thing within public earshot; especially since he is an officer of the court. Intelligence seems to be a subjective evaluation.

  • Jemand

    I take it Ben that you were alluding to my post re Rebekah Brooks? My lawyer once remarked that he weeds teachers out of the jury pool where he can. Where I come from each side can only challenge two jurors (ie send them off).

  • Ben-LA PACQUTE LO ES TODO

    It was more of a general statement about who knows more about what, Jemand. Disrespect was also part of it.

  • John Goss

    “I suspect, John Goss, that the Russians were so quick to act and effective in their excision of Crimea and Eastern Ukraine because they had the plan up on the board for the last ten years waiting for the right time to strike. Jemand I do not know. Crimea Russia could not relinquich because of an important naval and military base there. The Donbass region has already voted its allegiance to Russia, and will almost certainly, barring world war, return to its roots. But there is also a large number of pro-Russians outside of the Donbass region. The country is bankrupt. Poroshenko, i whom I have no great faith, may prove to be a better leader than the nasties who engineered the coup. What’s your brief analysis?

  • Peacewisher

    @John re British mainstream media:

    It is essential that a country has a free and independent media, or it’s elections cannot be properly legal. There are many countries that hold “barely legal” elections, but who would have thought that such serious charges could even be contemplated in these isles?

    Actually, I think that it’s you who keeps adding those four words and not Mary.

    As I have explained to you repeatedly, Doug : you cannot say you accept the right of Israel to exist provided it does not call itself a Jewish state when you know that Israel HAS defined itself as a Jewish (and democratic) state in one of its Basic Laws. Your “acceptance” is, in these circumstances, in fact a non-acceptance.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    By the way, Doug, Iran styles itself as the Islamic Republic of Iran.
    Do you accept the right of Iran to exist as an Islamic state?
  • Ben-LA PACQUTE LO ES TODO
    The Medes unified Iran as a nation and empire in 625 BCE.
    Do you think Israel, which extols it’s virtues as an independent Nation, would have any status save the UN or Western guilt?
    They need a lot of help, don’t they?
    ‘Someone clever will have to explain to me – very slowly – how on earth Rebecca was found innocent.’
    Cast your mind back to Murdoch divorce. There was nothing that was leaked out and the poor old Mrs. Murdoch was sent packing quietly into the wilderness.
    Then came the nanny (boom boom girl) who was Murdoch stimulant until she cuckolded Murdoch with the help of Miranda
    then there’s Tony Blair. ‘He was a few years younger than me but I remember him well. He was very glib, a chancer and, you know, he wasn’t really respected by anyone of my generation. Everybody used to say, it’s just as well he’s going into politics because he’ll never succeed at the Bar. We used to call him Miranda.’
    Again no publicity and a very private divorce, and no reporter or proprietor dared to hack into any bits of the scandal and the court cases.
    The ginger witch (yes I am anti-ginger, get over it) is property of the said cuckolded Murdoch and thus the cookie crumbles; not a squeak out of the pusillanimous hoards of medjia and the relevant gaggles of stenographers until she was declared innocent, and now everyone of them are falling over each other to point out her meteoric rise back to the top of the pile; as the come back kid.
    AS for the brouhaha surrounding the court costs it is a pre-emptive move to stop any probable retrials. Justice has always prevailed in the UK courts, Mr. Guinness suffering from bad memory was declared innocent of insider dealing, along with many other well deserving plutocrats/luminaries/elite whom have been vindicated and declared innocent and left the courts with their heads held high.
    However in reaction to such travesties of justice there are new measures of secret courts and secret evidence and secret witnesses. These have been set up to make sure that Muslims pay the piper and are sent down in an attempt to keep the balance and make sure that justice is seen to be dished out! This is in line with Muslims getting killed and harassed and racially abused whilst everyone is so concerned with the “tsunami of anti semi……” sweeping the land. There has always been an underclass to be kicked around/humiliated/despised/maltreated to make everyone feel better.
