BBC Propaganda 68

Please read and consider very carefully this brilliant dissection of the BBC’s propaganda blitz on Syria, at the time when the security establishment were trying to propel us into war against Assad, before they decided it was just as profitable to have a war against Assad’s enemies. For the security establishment and arms industry, any dream will do.

I do not agree with every single point made, but I do think every single point is worth considering and agree with a lot of it. My own opinion is that there was a genuine attack, but that the coverage of it was deliberately enhanced and exaggerated to a very large degree. The smoking gun remains the two versions of the soundtrack of Dr Hallam’s “live” interview. The failure to acknowledge that the “charity” featured is directly linked to one of the fighting rebel factions is less spectacular than some of the other possible fabrications, but in itself an appalling dereliction of journalistic integrity.

It is vital to remember the context. This massive propaganda broadcast, entitled “Saving Syria’s Children”, was put out by the BBC just before the crucial vote by the Commons on the government’s request to go to war with Syria, in order to “save Syrian civilians”.

Please do read the main page and I do urge you to follow all the links through because this is very, very important. Particularly in Scotland, millions of people have awoken to the fact that the BBC is purely an organ of state propaganda. The important next step is to acknowledge that the BBC’s dishonesty extends well beyond the subject of Scottish Independence.

Ref the Venezuela UNSC seat, I should have said ‘Wait for some adverse propaganda from the blog troll’.

It was the BBC’s coverage of Syria and Assad being accused of chemical attacks which awoke me to the BBC being complicit in advancing Wastemonsters drive for war at the behest of their American puppet masters. It was so blatant to anyone with basic powers of awareness, thought and analysis. The Scottish referendum coverage by them was a milder example but no less malignant and damaging.

Tariq Ali’s article is not quite so far off them mark, if at all, as I recalled. I think this is the ‘offending’ article linked below, which was published on a number of sites. It is actually rather good, and he only got SNP’s name wrong the one and only time he used it in full; for Indy supporters, in the aftermath of the referendum, that was a capital offence, given the unforgettable and still objectionable smear campaign on the nationalist theme from the most repugnant of BritNats in mainstream parties, and in the media, Project Smear which went hand-in-hand with Project Fear.

“When they then elected two MEP’s, Caroline Lucas and Jean Lambert the same reason was still used for minuscule coverage, i.e. ‘you have no representation in Parliament.”

That reminds me of the 2009 BBC Question Time invitation to the BNP’s Nick Griffin on becoming an MEP.

So the “N” in SNP stands for “National”, like the “N” in BNP does.

    From Omydyars Intercept.

“Agents from New Zealand’s national police force ransacked the home of a prominent independent journalist earlier this month who was collaborating with The Intercept on stories from the NSA archive furnished by Edward Snowden. The stated purpose of the 10-hour police raid was to identify the source for allegations that the reporter, Nicky Hager, recently published in a book that caused a major political firestorm and led to the resignation of a top government minister.

But in seizing all the paper files and electronic devices in Hager’s home, the authorities may have also taken source material concerning other unrelated stories that Hager was pursuing. Recognizing the severity of the threat posed to press freedoms from this raid, the Freedom of the Press Foundation today announced a global campaign to raise funds for Hager’s legal defense.”

Yup, I don’t really pay that much attention to the BBC but I was intrigued by a trailer on R4 yesterday for that nice little bourgeois love-in called ‘Midweek’ where nice little bourgeois people swap tales of their travels to the far corners while ex-yachtswoman and home-counties archetype Libby Purves drools over them. – OK I am bitter and twisted!

Anyway, the sylvan tones of La Purves announced an upcoming item about the heart warming tale of some female who was fighting with the Kurdish Peshmerga, enduring all sorts of hardship in order to bring freedom to her people (another Malala type perhaps?). It struck me as an odd sort of story for this uncritically self-satisfied programme but then the penny dropped…of course we are arming the Kurds to fight the Sunnis. If we ever change sides, the fragrant Libby will no doubt announce a reciprocal tale of courageous Sunni Arabs suffering for their people.

ps years ago I inherited a copy of Dr Goebels’ diaries and he gives some useful tips on how to do effective propaganda, the BBC has learned well from the master.

What you hate Habbabkuk, like other right-wing neo-cons, is democracy when it delivers a left-of-centre government.

To you such a government must be ridiculed, undermined and brought down one way or another.

To you and your ilk democracy is a dangerous activity that must be controlled by the powerful rich and right-wing elites, lest the “common” people get too uppity and start demanding a say in how their country is governed.

I am sad that you have such a narrow mind.

Three points to highlight on this matter are the seeming self-identification of one of the participants in the “napalm bomb” scenes (a Netherlands resident); new testimony from an FSA fighter stationed in the region in August 2013 declaring that the events portrayed by the BBC did not take place, and the chicanery demonstrated by Newsnight in a retrospective piece in August (essentially bemoaning the result of last year’s Syria vote) which resulted in the broadcast of two inaccurate editions of the same programme (and which is now the subject of a fresh complaint).

The Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed that Bradford West MP George Galloway will not be charged over a speech in made in Leeds in August declaring that Bradford was an ‘an Israel-free zone’.

Following the speech on August 2, which was posted online, several complaints were made to Yorkshire police that Galloway’s comments amounted to hate crime.

These allegations have been comprehensively dismissed by the CPS.

“This has been an extremely expensive waste of police’ and CPS’ time forced on them by ultra-Zionists who were pursuing a vendetta against me,” Galloway said.

“My comments were aimed at the state of Israel which – I repeat what I said at the time – is an illegal, savage and barbarous state, and had nothing whatever to do with race or religion. And they have the benefit of being true.

That country has more censures against it by the United Nations than the rest of the countries in the world put together, refuses to abide by resolutions and continues to illegally grab land and persecute the rightful owners of it and uses its military to blockade and murder the people of Gaza.

I take back not a word and I will continue to forcefully condemn Israel.”

That is nonsense of course, Dooug.

But why have you got so excited? All the above just because I said – very correctly – that the Venezuelan Foreign Minister’s rhetoric was over-the-top.

I mean, it’s not as if Venezuela had suddenly abolished poverty or liberated half a continent or something, is it – it just got a seat on the UNSC for two years.

Are you not well at the moment?

  • Skotskinorge

The BBC propaganda against Scotland is child’s play compared to what other countries suffer. None of our people were bombed as a result of it. The Iraqis, Libyans, Afghans and Serbs, as well as the ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine, were not so lucky. Sadly, good people on the left who experienced the BBC’s lies in the Scottish independence debate still fall for their lies regarding other countries of the world.

I respect Craig’s opinion. When he said this was “a brilliant disection” and “very important” and urged us to follow all the links through, I took him at his word. I’ve spent the last grim three hours trawling through the blog that he links to and reading every bit of correspondence between Robert Stuart and the BBC complaints department. It tells us nothing useful about how the BBC is used as a propaganda tool (which it undoubtedly is) but instead documents in tiresome detail one very pompous and pig-headed man’s descent into mental illness. I’m sorry, but he’s plainly deranged.

My opinion of Craig (and also of George Galloway, who apparently also took this nonsense seriously) has just gone down a couple of notches.

The propaganda value of this horrible incident, which conveniently happened with a BBC film crew on hand, was very great.

The question we should be asking is who the real perpetrators were.

  • craig Post author

    Gutter,

Could you back that up, starting with your explanation of the different takes of Dr Rola Hallam speaking, and the failure of the BBC to tell us that Dr Hallam and her charity were part of a rebel group?

  • Ba'al Zevul

So the “N” in SNP stands for “National”, like the “N” in BNP does.

And not ‘Nationalist’. I can’t – and wouldn’t ever – speak for the BNP, but that is wholly intentional as far as the SNP is concerned.

BTW, the ‘Fred’ in ‘Fred’…does it stand for ‘Frederick’, like the ‘Fred’ in ‘Fred West’?

  • Rob Royston

The control by the BBC over the minds of non-thinking voters was well demonstrated during the 2010 election.
The SNP were refused representation in the Leaders debates because, according to the BBC they could not be the governing party at Westminster and were therefore “irrelevant”.
Labour and the BBC used this buzzword in every broadcast, in every newspaper article and in all the comments sections from then on until the vote.
There was a marked decline in SNP voting at the General Election but everyone was shocked at the extent of the SNP landslide a year later in the Holyrood elections.
Leaders debates should include all the leaders as it was proven in 2010 that the way they are run at present directs the votes away from the “irrelevant” others.

It is ludicrous to assert that the SE Counter Terrorism Unit exercise recently carried out on Surrey streets was to leave the residents and taxpayers in a state of assurance. More like some winding up of fears and some more destabilization.

I have to ask myself where was the Joint Threat Research Group – Computer Network Informations Operation rapid response team for this story – it mentions US veep son, a Ukrainian energy company board member, no-longer able to serve in the navy due to taking the wrong sort of medicine. Surely this should have been dismissed as a ‘conspiracy theory’ or explained away using the other usual techniques that we see so often here?

Any “reassurance of the public” is surely incidental to the main objective of such an exercise, which is to ensure that the public authorities concerned are able to function effectively should a terrorist incident actually occur rather than having to improvise on the spot.

As so often, you are displaying a “they can’t win” mentality: you condemn the exercise, but if there were a terrorist incident and the response to it were inadequate and bungled you would be among the first to bitch on about it.

I think you allow your eagerness to post on here to over-ride the application of a little thought before doing so.
