In a recent comment, I included two URLs nicely enclosed in angle brackets <>. AFAIR this used to work OK, so I was surprised to see that they had disappeared in the posted comment. Fortunately (using the nice new edit button) I was able to add them, very crudely, to the end of the para, but didn’t have time to delete the resulting blanks in the text (not that it matters very much). Could this be fixed, please?

Thanks for letting us know. The “<a href=” tag still works in comments and we see successful examples every day. Without seeing the earlier version of your comment, it’s difficult to ascertain what went wrong in this case.
If you find it happening again, please copy the initial version of the comment and post it here. (The forum software is much more tolerant of html formatting tags.) We can then investigate and let you know what’s causing the problem.

Unfortunately that method doesn’t work. The angle brackets mark the start and end of an HTML tag, and if the text in between them can’t be interpreted as valid HTML code then it is discarded.
The simplest way to include a hyperlink is to paste the URL as bare text (including the “
https://” prefix), with no angle brackets. The blog software will recognise it and hyperlink it automatically.To format normal text as a hyperlink, the URL must be enclosed within the quotation marks of the
<a href="">tag, followed by the text to be hyperlinked and the</a>tag to close the link. For instance,<a href="https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/">Craig Murray’s blog</a>which results in:

To post something like <https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/> you would need to type code for the angle brackets rather than the characters themselves.
To show the angle brackets as characters, you can type them as
<and>respectively.However, it would be unconventional and confusing to cite web page references by enclosing them in angle bracket characters, which have a reserved meaning in HTML.
Thanks for the replies. I was just using the standard quick-and-easy trick that lets you type URLs within text, without having to worry about punctuation (from the text) being misinterpreted as part of the URL. Now I know not to do it on this site!
