ACLU Publishes Online Database of Civilian Casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq

by andrew on April 16, 2007 10:34 am in War in Iraq

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has, in the last few days, made public hundreds of files on civilians killed or injured by Coalition Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The ACLU received the records in response to a Freedom of Information Act request it filed in June 2006.

They have created an online database that can be searched to find details of particular incidents and a complete log of the claims can also be browsed.

I read some highlights on this blog:

Larry Johnson has pointed out yesterday that what America is going through at the moment in relation to Virginia Tech, Iraq goes through every day, week in, week out, year in, year out – only on an even bigger scale.

An excellent information resource. For a number of days I have been looking for something like this since I saw this BBC article.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6558769.stm

It talks about Afghan civilians being the main victims but only talks about insurgents doing the killing.

For earlier quantitative estimates and case studies of civilian deaths in Iraq there is a report from IBC from 2005.

    See http://craigmurrayfriends.blogspot.com/2005/07/us…
