Israeli Criminals No Longer Welcome 176

The state of Palestine today becomes a member of the International Criminal Court. This has a practical significance beyond the additional political pressure it piles on Israel. It means that in future Israelis will be liable to the jurisdiction of the court for crimes committed on Palestinian territory, despite Israel’s refusal to sign up to the court along with that other international rogue state, the United States of America.

In the case of the murders on the Mavi Marmara, the Court ruled that the scale of the incident did not reach the bar required for the Court’s jurisdiction – that it does not try war crimes which are individual acts. However it will be impossible to argue that at the next mass Israeli killing in Gaza, or even at the next large scale seizure of territory for Israeli settlements.

One of the many disgraces of neo-con government in the UK is the existence of legislation passed by the UK parliament specifically to allow Israeli war criminals to visit the UK without fear of arrest. That however will be overridden by Britain’s obligation to detain and hand over persons indicted by the International Criminal Court. Today’s apparently small step could change the atmosphere for the arrogant Israeli elite in a fundamental way. They will no longer be able to massacre hundreds of Palestinian women and children whenever they feel it boosts their cause, without some concern about personal consequences.

With the prospect of a deal bringing Iran back into the international community also appearing bright, we can be allowed a rare moment of optimism.

Just turned on the “Leaders Debate” on ITV a few minutes ago.

Never seen Cameron looking so nervous!

BUT DO CARRY ON ANYWAY… >> but the copilot could have induced the pilot to go to the toilet by encouraging him to eat a diuretic food or by spiking something he was drinking with a diuretic drug. >> YES, I THINK YOU’VE SOLVED THE MYSTERY >>

I am so happy the author of the above bilge – obviously a person as seriously disturbed as the late co-pilot – is no longer in an occupation allowing him to bear lethal weapons!

Thank you for that, Anon1, and at the risk of sounding immodest I must say I think I did a rather fine job there.

The feebleness of the responses makes the moment even more delicious.

But I must away to peel a rather succulent-looking Jaffa orange brought to my table all the way from Israel by courtesy of an international supermarket chain which shall remain anonymous lest Ganglion starts bombarding it with his impertinent demands.

Most inconsiderate of Britain and tewwibly unsporting don’t y’know.

On the new thread the resident troll refers to the Palestine discussion as ‘sterile’. Ukraine is dismissed similarly.

Tell that to the Palestinians and Ukrainians in their torment right now.

BBC reports on the talks conclude with a quote from BiBi. Is that why the BBC is referred to as the BiBiCee?

‘But Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu also took to Twitter to declare: “Any deal must significantly roll back Iran’s nuclear capabilities and stop its terrorism and aggression.” ‘

You don’t sound too pleased about the breakthrough in the talks with Iran.

But feel free to correct me if I’ve got the wrong impression!

Anon1, “usual nonsense,” “useful idiots,” “Israel is not engaging in genocide or apartheid,” my goodness, Anon1 is a very convincing advocate indeed, with all those facts and logic! Anon1, you should be Natanyahu’s legal counsel when he defends himself against the charge of genocide,

I for one would certainly enjoy seeing you use your distinguished education and enormous intelligence to acquit him point by incisive point, especially how you would skillfully, I am sure, rebut the precedent of ICJ Advisory Opinion on the Construction of a Wall and the findings of the Kahan Report with your detailed facts about who’s a useful idiot and why everything is nonsense.

I will particularly enjoy your final impassioned speech about why in the interest of humanity and reconciliation they should make it a 10-foot drop and tie more sandbags to his feet.

To clarify, “Carter” in that story is Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, not former President Jimmy Carter.

I’m still annoyed when I see a story with “Clinton” in the headline, and it turns out to be about Hillary, not Bill.

The USA, certainly the Obama administration, seem to be putting themselves at a distance from Israel. Although still funding and supplying they seem less supportive and agreeable. Hopefully this will lead to the Israeli government being less aggressive

How does the posting an item of breaking news (the Iran talks) get construed by the troll as the giving of an opinion?

    Too true.

Israel: Lying abroad for your country
    By: Karl Sabbagh
    3 April, 2015

By failing to analyse and understand the rationale behind Israel’s propaganda, Western media is complicit in its lies.

The 16th and 17th century English author and diplomat Henry Wotton described an ambassador as someone “sent abroad to lie for his country”.

Nowadays, the principle of “lying abroad” enables Israel to hammer home its message and drown out that of the Palestinians throughout Western media.

It is not surprising that nations use propaganda to cover up their sins. What is surprising is that so-called intelligent, informed journalists report Israel’s fabricated stories time and again, and rarely dig deeper.

Even worse, when the truth becomes known weeks, months or years later, it is buried in NGO reports or academic papers and rarely gets reported at all.

It may seem naive to complain about this – surely no government tells the truth?

Well, there is a difference between not telling the whole truth and telling blatant lies. Blatant “black is white” lies by a British or US spokesperson would be quickly revealed for what they are by a free and assiduous press.

But look at how long it took the parents of Rachel Corrie or Tom Hurndall to establish how their children were murdered, in the face of institutional denials by Israelis at every level.

One tiny recent example from the Guardian, not the worst offender by any means, was a headline to a recent news story which read: “Confrontation looms after Hizballah missile strikes kill two Israeli soldiers.”

“Here we go again,” the reader is led to think, “those dreadful Arabs attacking Israel.” In fact, the headline failed to reflect the fact that ten days earlier, Israel had attacked a Syrian town and killed two senior military figures, and Hizballah was retaliating.

Every justification Israel has given for its successive wars on Gaza, widely repeated in the Western media, has later turned out to be fabricated to appear as if Hamas triggered them.
