The Respectability of Torture

St Mary’s University College, Thurs 1st August, 7.30pm

Craig Murray, former British ambassador to Uzbekistan, was a whistleblower who was removed from his ambassadorial post by Tony Blair for exposing the Tashkent regime‟s use of rape and systematic torture, including the boiling to death of political opponents. He has also spoken out against Central Asia‟s appalling dictatorships, regimes which are allies of the West, involved in torture and rendition, and was accused of threatening MI6‟s relationship with the CIA. Now a human rights activist, author and broadcaster, he outlines the dynamics of torture and the hypocrisy of incriminated Western governments.

My first public appearance for a while will be in Belfast on 1 August where I shall be giving a talk.  Long term readers of this blog will recall that, while my focus is largely on international affairs, the domestic political achievements I most hope to see are a united Ireland and an independent Scotland.

Those 26 will leave prisons with walls to live in outdoor prisons.

What operation? Hope it’s not one of those organ transplants we keep reading about?

‘Two other members of the committee were absent: Netanyahu, because of his operation, and Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch (Israel Beytenu), who is abroad.’

    Hi team!

During my absence, and having been reading back through the contributions, I see Flaming Mary has stated that she hates her country!

    What a surprise!

I suspect that other Murrayistas harbour such feelings, but aren’t quite so brazen in coming forward as our frequent poster, so I thought, as a little exercise, I would ask them, instead, to think of five (or more!) things they like about Britain and list them here.

If you are struggling to find anything positive to say, then I suggest a one-way ticket to Russia, Iran or any other country judged “civilized” by the Murrayistas, of your choice, where you can wax lyrical about the wonderful fairness of life under your chosen regime, and from which the horrors of your existence in the leafy lanes of suburban Surrey will be but a distant memory.

You will, of course, be going against the general direction of human migration, but don’t let that stop you! You’ll feel just like those dissidents who went over to the Eastern Bloc for a better life during the Cold War. And come back again. 🙂

Gosh, looks like it’s all things Israel again!

Why shouldn’t Tom Jones sing in Israel, Miserati?

So kind of Villager to send felicitations and further health advice to Craig on his foot trouble.

This from ‘Getting Back Into the Water’ on Craig’s ticker problems.

    http://www.craigmurray.org.uk/archives/2013/07/gently-back-into-the-water/#comment-418806 !!

We do not know or need to know whether Craig has had an orthopaedic operation and/or treatment from a cardiologist. Sufficient that he is alive and well and has not succumbed to one of those extrajudicial killings that our masters are so proficient in arranging. I hope he is on holiday having a good rest.

  • Flaming June

Trust Anon to bring that up. Actually if you listen to Craig in the Vimeo video that has been linked, you will hear him say that he is not proud of his country.

Perhaps you would like to find the qualification I made after I was jumped on by the trolls. The trolls love their country/countries of course.

What a nerve. Thames Water want to stick an extra £29 on our bills as a one-off payment. The average bill is c £350.

Reasons givens – The cost of their £5bn Thames tunnel (which many say is unnecessary), extra sewer maintenance and unpaid bills ie bad debts. In other words, we are paying higher bills because many cannot or will not pay their existing bills. ie a vicious circle.

Thames Water owned by Macquairie Bank Australia and ownership is hidden behind Kemble.

    Nevermind,
it has been done. I apologize again hoping that you do not think that it was intentional.

    Rubbaduck:

Regardless of whether you support Israel or not – your call for evidence of this is ironic in view of your very consistent failure to provide any evidence at all of any of your assertions, or indeed to answer any questions put to you with anything other than three more questions – I’m not seeing any movement on this question of Scorgie’s, yet.

“What do you see as the best chance for peace between the state of Israel and a proposed state of Palestine?”

Break the silence, please. Inform the wretched groundlings. What is your peace plan? Would it be based on relentlessly trolling the Palestinians until they give up and seek refuge in another country? And do you think that would work? How many assistants would you need to accomplish this? Would Anon, Villager, Kempe be enough? Have you made aliyah yet? When will you exercise your right to return? Chicken soup and matzos or taramasalata?

So many daft questions. Want more? Or would you like to answer the serious one?
I think I know the answer to that one, anyway.

    jon,

many thanks for reassigning my posts to the original author. It was no intention of mine but apparently very easy to perform. It would be easy to prevent such misshaps or intentional sabotage by a software check that the authors name agree with his email address.

‘Have you considered the “periods of silence”, Mary, as recommended by Villager?’

    .
    Such hypocrisy.

    If the caps fit. LOL

    Anon,

It takes frequent hostile mention of Israel to encourage shy and retiring posters such as yourself to post here. And even more concentration on that self-styled beacon of democracy to induce you to make any constructive comments. Of which we await the first, breathlessly.

I see Israel is claiming that the expansion of settlement construction announced yesterday is part of a quid-pro-quo in the agreement to release Palestinian prisoners. The Palestinian negotiator, Saab Erekat denies that even an implicit agreement was given to settlement construction – his denial comes right at the bottom of this blatantly slanted CBS piece:

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57598039/israel-oks-1200-new-settlement-homes-in-palestinian-deal/

    This is Erekat’s position:

From Jonathan Cook’s new blog, written from Nazareth, ie from within the belly of the beast.

Israel’s prize: 300 new settlers per prisoner 12 August 2013

Few of us – even the participants – believe that there is any hope these latest “peace” talks will lead anywhere. All the Palestinians will get from the negotiations are a handful of political prisoners, while Israel gets a quick expansion of the very settlements it is supposed to be about to dismantle as part of a peace agreement.

The current exchange rate is 1,200 new settler homes for each of the 26 Palestinian prisoners to be released. Or looked at another way, about 300 Jewish settlers for each prisoner.

That bargain looks even worse when one reads the small print. This first release of prisoners, all of whom have been in jail for more than 20 years, are inmates assessed by Israel as posing a low security risk. Nonetheless, Israel is insisting that 14 of the 26 not return to the Palestine supposedly about to be created but into exile in a new jail, one that gets intermittently bombed: the prison of Gaza. Most of the rest will be returned to the tiny prisons of Area A of the West Bank. Previous experience warns us that Israel will re-arrest them the moment they try to stray out of these enclaves.

If the Palestinians will win nothing from these talks, Israel has much to gain. In addition to a boom in “legitimate” settler house-building, it gets some breathing space from its growing status as international pariah – in the eyes of most of the world’s people, if not their governments. It also delays the Palestinian Authority from pursuing the most fruitful action it can take at the moment: going back to the UN and heading for the International Criminal Court at the Hague.

It helps too to deceive us again into believing the US wants to exert some control over Israel’s behaviour and is doing its best to bring peace to the region. And when the peace process eventually goes belly-up, Israel and the US get to blame the Palestinians again, with the hope for Israel that it can annex Area C – most of the West Bank – as a bonus.

FJ -Cook calls it correctly IMO. Still digging, but it looks as if the settlement – for- prisoner deal was cooked up between the US and Israel, without input from the Palestinian side, and Abbas had his arm twisted by threats of withdrawal of aid, to agree to this. Someone’s going to shoot Abbas, and it won’t be the Israelis.

Since Bernard Levin’s name was mentioned earlier, this interview of his with K is of interest:

Recommend any one watching it actually sees all three parts, about 30 minutes. May begin to change your life.

Its for everybody of course. But, few things sadden me more than seeing people like Mary (9 posts already, just this morning!) and Herbie ageing, ostensibly greying but still not growing, being held back by their internal conflicts and appearing here repeatedly to score points.

Enjoy the weather and have a good day!

A shady defence? Clarence House stands up for Prince Charles’ ‘lobbying incontinence’
Monday, 12 August 2013 10:37 AM By Alex Stevenson

A defiant Clarence House has defended the Prince of Wales’ right to intervene in government matters, in a move imperilling the monarchy’s reputation for impartiality.

A spokesperson for the Prince of Wales said it was Prince Charles’ “duty” to talk to ministers in order to communicate the concerns of ordinary people he meets.

It follows the revelation that the heir to the throne has held 36 private meetings with ministers since the 2010 general election, including seven with David Cameron.

    Yeah, sure.

It’s PR gibberish of course, but so poorly constructed as to raise further questions around what he is actually lobbying for.

We already know it ain’t the peeps, so what are they hiding?
