The Big Gay Wedding 389

As long term readers know, I love the Eurovision Song Contest. It is just so much fun and so resoundingly daft. Graham Norton’s comment last night, “it’s like the gay wedding I’ll never have”, summed it up rather well. We also learnt that Danish humour is impenetrable. Having once spent a week there living with Danish friends, I guess a country that seems to live on raw fish and raw eggs will forever shimmer beyond my comprehension. Like Hamlet’s mind – impossible to understand completely, but marvelous.

I was however saddened by the audience booing of the two young Russian girls. That was really nasty and unfair. They were scarcely more than children, for goodness sake. Putin is not their fault. That booing was an exhibition of racism; nothing else you can call it. If people wanted to make a point, they could have screamed for the Ukrainian girl – they didn’t have to boo the young Russians.

People always complain about political voting, but I think that’s half the fun. I always enjoy the voting far more than most of the singing. Last night, I think, was political voting in a wonderful way. It was a joyful expression of approval for the idea that human beings can and should be what they want to be. It wasn’t the first time either – I remember a similarly gender challenging singer from Israel winning some years ago. What was even better this year, was that another stereotype was also challenged, in that Conchita swept up much support from Eastern as well as Western Europe. Let it be said that she had a damn good song too.

We voted for the Polish girls. I thought the honesty of their approach was brilliant, and reminded me of so many happy days in Warsaw in my youth. Good to see women doing the washing too.*

All in all, great fun and a life-affirming evening. Now to clear away all the mess – why did I stick all those empty Prosecco bottles on the front garden railings?

*Private joke for my friends at Russia Today media (formerly trading as Indymedia).

    The EU in action; http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/14/technology/google-should-erase-web-links-to-some-personal-data-europes-highest-court-says.html?hp&_r=0

BRUSSELS — The highest court in the European Union decided on Tuesday that Google must grant users of its search engine a right to delete links about themselves in some cases, including links to legal records.

The decision by the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg is a blow for Google, which has sought to avoid the obligation to remove links when requested by European users of its service.

By ruling that an Internet company like Google must comply with European privacy laws when operating in the European Union — a consumer market of about 550 million people — the court is indicating that such companies must operate in a fundamentally different way than they do in the United States.

Something else is emanating from Russia today. Unsurprisingly it has not been covered by western MSM. Ukraine has not paid for its gas for March and April this year. Yatesnyuk wants a reduction on the previously subsidised gas to the region. There is plenty of dosh from the IMF tied loan so if Yatsenyuk is honorable he should honor his countries debts. Anyway, it looks like Ukraine is having to go onto a Pay as You Go scheme.

    http://en.itar-tass.com/russia/731313

Gasprom, the Russian supplier of gas to the Ukraine, was you may remember the company from which Timoshenko was serving a prison sentence for siphoning off, not gas, but cash from the company and stashing it away in western bank accounts. The new NAZI government set her free following the coup.

Things could work out badly for the elections on May 22 if Ukrainians start thinking about the implications before casting their vote.

    A.Node – very good link

Mary – thank you, I was unaware of the Biden connection, but not surprised – it does support what the analysts I have cited are saying.

“Donetsk declares Independence. I want to hear Putins reply.”

Ben, see my earlier comment and posted link at 2:57 pm, regarding Gasprom. It is unlikely that Putin will welcome the independent states of Donetsk until after the elections later this month. Why have a slice of cake when you can have the lot?

Ukrainians are not stupid. They know who it was who killed their fellow-Ukrainians in Odessa, murdered residents who went out to vote in the referenda. That the west has failed to recognise the referenda is their biggest mistake in a whole series of mistakes that started with the secession of Crimea to Russia.

If anybody is likely to cancel the election it is those that are illegally in power. Putin has been one step ahead from the start, even pulling back troops when it was obvious that Yatsenyuk’s army of thugs was intent on using private militia dressed as Russians to create another false flag.

Yes, John. Gazprom debt so important that ‘Yats’ has declared that of the $3 billion from IMF, 2.5 goes to the debt, but it doesn’t solve the problem of future deliveries. I think it is part and parcel of the West’s interests (primarily US exports).

  • A Node

    Yes, Scouse Billy.

Hats off to Brian M. Heiss for a thorough debunking of Western propaganda. Although it wasn’t his primary intent, he has provided us with a powerful proof of the the extent to which our media is controlled. Here are some of the sources I can remember telling me about “Putin’s anti-gay laws” ….

    TV and newspaper news
    New Scientist
Olympics reports on the sport pages and TV
    newspaper editorials and opinion pieces
    stand-up comedians and panel shows
    discussion shows
    letters pages
    radio phone-ins

…. and until someone on this blog* posted the Heiss link, I too was one of the sundry dupes who repeated and re-enforced the lies. But in this case, they went too far. They showed too much of their power to sell a provable lie, and now we have a clear example to refer to those who underestimate the power and mendacity of the media.

*Thank you and sorry I can’t remember your name

I asked Habbabkuk: Which newspaper was that Habbabkuk?

    He replies:

    “A respectable francophone publication, Doug…”

Not really an answer is it Habbabkuk?

“Is it my translation you wish to “check”? Failing a rapid reply to this question, I shall consider correspondence closed on this issue.”

That’s it Habbabkuk, quit while you’re behind.

Back to Biden’s son, R. Hunter Biden.

I see that it’s actually Bill Lane of Caterpillar. Caterpillar’s machines are used in Israel entity to demolish Palestinian homes and to kill people like Rachel Corrie.

It’s Caroline Miles from Save the Children.

There is a printing error so that the two names coincide.

I noticed a Sharon Waxman from Miliband D’s International Rescue Centre.

    An incestuous nest.

Mary Re… UK war crimes, and ICC…

I wonder if it will be yet another Sham, waste of Loadza Money…or is BLiar getting closer to being turfed out…and will they Ever get round to the current crew, for their crimes in Libya, and now Syria.

“… British defence officials are confident that the ICC will not move to the next stage and announce a formal investigation, largely because the UK has the capacity to investigate the allegations itself.

However, the announcement is a blow to the prestige of the armed forces, as the UK is the only western state that has faced a preliminary investigation at the ICC. The court’s decision places the UK in the company of countries such as the Central African Republic, Colombia and Afghanistan.

In a statement, the ICC said: “The new information received by the office alleges the responsibility of officials of the United Kingdom for war crimes involving systematic detainee abuse in Iraq from 2003 until 2008.

“The re-opened preliminary examination will analyse, in particular, alleged crimes attributed to the armed forces of the United Kingdom deployed in Iraq between 2003 and 2008….

Re Israeli Crimes… Check this disturbing piece –

” A repeated theme of pro-Israeli, anti-Palestinian propaganda is to circulate images ofPalestinian children taking part in such militarized displays in order to advance the belief that Palestinian culture is inherently violent and “teaches children hate” and that therefore Israeli violence is a justified defensive response.

But these pictures are remarkable because they reveal the extent to which Israeli culture has been militarized and how Israeli children are not immune to this – a key theme in Max Blumenthal’s book Goliath.

There is no doubt that both Israeli and Palestinian children have been subjected to this kind of brutalization by adults. It is horrifying whenever children are given guns and encouraged to imagine themselves as killers.

Such activities are arguably in violation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that member countries “shall refrain from recruiting any person who has not attained the age of fifteen years into their armed forces.”

As I wrote on a previous occasion when such disturbing images of Israeli children appeared:

Children live with the consequences of Israel’s violent occupation and oppression of the Palestinian people, whether it is Israeli children indoctrinated to continue this oppression as adults, or Palestinian children brutalized and traumatized by the organized violence of occupation, colonialism and apartheid that pervades their lives.

This is never a reflection on the children, but on the adults who subject them to such ugliness.”

Have you expected habbitkuk to change his schoolmasterly behaviour, Doug? fat chance
Its a lifelong trait that befalls those who feel righteous, but are enthralled and tyranised by their academic blinkers.

He made a simple mistake an eight year old school boy would have gotten right and thats pretty normal for all of us, he’s nothing special, just a little disabled when it comes to linking to whatever he blathers on about.

He’s not here to inform, such as most of us, but to argue and diseminate, to try us with his playfull nonsense. Bless….

  • Habbabkuk (La vita è bella) !

Let the record note that Mr Scorgie declines to say whether or not he endorses the intolerant remarks made by Russian vice-premier Rogozine and Russian political heavy Vladimir Jirinovsky on the result of the Eurovision song contest 2014.

For ease of reference, here are those remarks again, as reported by a respectable French-language newspaper (my translation)

Rogozine : “The result of the Eurovision contest has given the supporters of European integration a glimpse if what awaits them if they join Europe, ie., a bearded girl”.

Jirinovsky : “Our indignation knows no bounds. This is the end of Europe. Europe has gone mad. There aren’t any men and women there any longer, just “its” instead.”.

Sorry, I did not deliberately try to mislead. The Ukrainian elections, as everybody knows, but nobody corrected me, take place on 25th May. I’ve been out canvassing. It’s our elections on 22nd.

Plenty of time then for the Russians to switch off the lights as a pilot if Yatsenyuk does not pay his energy bills. He cannot expect the Russians to give him subsidised gas now the Ukraine has gone in to bat for the Yanks and done nothing but insult the Russians! Can he? And a pilot test of what the future has in store might make a few voters think. I wonder.
