Yes, as you know, I too have suspicions about these things. I just try to remain sceptical and logical – as do you – and to resist the temptation to attribute everything to the hand of the security state, though there is enough already to damn them, as it were. I fear that in some important ways, the militarisation of important elements of our society – economy, culture, academia – is perhaps less obvious yet because of that is almost as profound. I think the constant in-flow of US TV dramas celebrating in a very heavily glamourised way the work of law enforcement agencies of various kinds, is concerning.
Many of them are very well-made, excellent scripts, etc., and I enjoy watching them. But I am conscious of a low-level, infiltrative propaganda which they seem to impart, which says that US security organs, together, form a force for unadulterated benificence in the world and in US society itself.
