Happy Birthday, Craig, on a day shared, appropriately, with John Wilkes (b 1727). In the more distant past, on 17 October 539 BC, Cyrus The Great of Persia marched into Babylon and issued what has been called the first Human Rights Declaration (but see also http://tinyurl.com/y9k6ek5 ). More recently, it was the day when Albert Einstein arrived in the USA in 1937 as a refugee from Nazi Germany. Closer to Dundee, on 17 October 1850 James Young obtained a patent for the extraction of paraffin from shale, the beginning of the paraffin industry in West Lothian; and in 1860 The first Open Golf Championship was held, at Prestwick.

    Best Wishes Craig.

Don’t worry about forgetting stuff now that you’re an old geezer.

You can be reassured by the wise words of Mark Twain,

“If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything.”

And the same to you too Brian.

Sofia, good to see you back. I was praising your satire a few days back, regarding your Daddy though I dubbed him Noddy because he would not read anything of importance yet still thought he was the main man in Toytown. But he appears to be taking some things seriously now.

Can’t agree though with Mark Twain’s quip. I forgot, and nobody reminded me, my grandson’s birthday which was Tuesday, and only remembered when Craig mentioned his own. You don’t want to get old. 🙂

    “I was praising your satire…”

Thanks. To be even noticed by such a titan of literary criticism is an honour.

Regarding Dad and my increasingly infrequent visits to these threads. He hasn’t left the armchair in his shed for weeks, ever since I rigged up the 10 gall G+T drip.

It leaves me free to make extended forays into meatspace and discover the pleasures of blueberry picking, digging spuds, exploring the Hibernian glens on my bike and relating to flesh and blood humans, who, by and large, are pretty sound.

Since Dad only eats Cream Crackers it’s easy enough every few weeks to visit Surbiton, restock both liquids and solids and be out of the country again before he’s even noticed. His passes his output into the internet like nothing has changed, an insubstansive brown/green liquid irritant which tends sticks breifly to anything it touches before turning into a fetid vapour and blowing away.

It’s good to see the stamina of the regulars is undiminished. In fact Mary is inspiring proof that being full of tubes doesn’t prevent a person from contributing a stream of value.

It’s great too to see all the neophytes freshening the stream.

Finally a reminder to the grownups in Mennies.

Have a great night, but remember he is a very old and special kind of fossil, so just make sure Uncle Craig behaves himself and remembers where he’s staying before you stagger off.

” Isn’t the birthday boy supposed to buy rounds?”

You don’t expect Queen Eliz to buy her own B’day drinks, do you. How could you say such a thing. 🙂
