Cameron says new EU countries should have transitional controls on immigration. Err, they do, David. That’s why Bulgaria and Romania are in the EU but their citizens don’t have the right to come here.

Other countries introduced transitional controls when Poland joined, but Blair decided not to, based on a ridiculously low estimate of the number who’d come to the UK. Given that other countries had introduced controls, it was blindingly obvious that many more would come to Britain as a result of having nowhere else to go. Either Blair was incredibly stupid, or else he knew what would happen and his intention was to use immigration to drive down labour costs in the UK for his business friends, regardless of the strain imposed on taxpayer funded services. I know which I believe.
