Turning one’s mind again towards the World Bank Mary, brings into view John Perkins. According to his book, Perkins’ function was to convince the political and financial leadership of underdeveloped countries to accept enormous development loans from institutions like the World Bank and USAID. Saddled with debts they could not hope to pay, those countries were forced to acquiesce to political pressure from the United States on a variety of issues. Perkins argues in his book that developing nations were effectively neutralized politically, had their wealth gaps driven wider and economies crippled in the long run.

Thankfully this video summarizes much that can be read in Perkin’s best seller.

    I missed this:

Hypocrisy looms large this morning on Radio 4 today. Gushing over the Scotsman’s win, clearly misoginist in their adoration, when giving Ms. Bartoli no such platform.” – Nevermind

Er, Murray is British (or Scottish if you prefer), and the first British men’s winner for 77 years? Might that explain the matter? Or will you now deduce that Radio 4 is xenophobic as well as misogynistic?

I hope no public money was wasted on a reply to your letter.

I have watched the clip, Komodo, and remain unconverted, but he does come across as marginally more interesting than the other idiots.

Talking about Brand in the 3rd person is not patronising, it’s a natural reaction to someone who isn’t quite there.

  • Anon

An enjoyable read, Dreoilin, but of what relevance is this to the issue of the alleged misogyny of the Today Programme?

  • Komodo

Time may prove me wrong, Anon, it often does, but I think you’re confusing the act with the actuality.

Don’t deny it, Komodo, you’ve already booked a seat at one of his stand-up gigs. Afterwards you will wax-lyrical about his “profundity” and defend him from all detractors by saying “But you don’t understand Russell” and “he’s actually very clever”, or even “he can have my granddaughter any day”.

Well let’s face it, the men’s game is more interesting. I think V. Williams in her prime would have ranked about 145th in the men’s game. It’s just a fact of life and no amount of hand-wringing from the Guardian is going to change it, as with the constant attempts by the BBC to make us interested in Women’s football. I wish the Graun would concentrate on real injustices instead of middle-class faux lefty pet grievances.

Don’t deny it, Anon, you’ve already booked a seat at next year’s Wimbledon…..

Serco have agreed to a forensic audit ref overcharging HMG for electronic tagging. G4S have refused so Grayling is referring them to the SFO for investigation and is making changes in his department because of the mismanagement of the contracts. He seems very angry about what has gone on. Sadiq Khan asked if and when the two companies are repaying the overcharge which amounts to + £500m.

All this as the ConDems pour more and more of our taxes into outsourcing of services including the penal system and probation services.

Far too elitist for me, Komodo, I wouldn’t be able to suffer the sight of people with more money than me eating strawberries and cream without wailing away at the injustice of it all.

  • Dreoilin

How much are strawberries and cream at Wimbledon? Anyone know?
I can serve them up at home for next to nothing.

  • Anon

In true Murrayista fashion I would condemn it for its misogny, racism, elitism, zionism and fascism and then throw myself in front of the play like that prat did at the boat race.

  • Komodo

In the impossible event of my ever being within a mile of Wimbledon’s entrance, I’d be creased up laughing at the prices people are prepared to pay for mediocre fruit, personally. But – oh – second thoughts. If Russell Brand were billed to sing “Congratulations” on Centre Court….make that five miles.

  • Komodo

Just harvesting mine, Dreoilin. They cost a couple of shots of plant food, plus the initial price of a couple of plants (now ~15 thanks to not caring about the offshoots)

Anon – you’re very bitter today. Do feel free to share it. Or are you indeed Anon?

  • Anon

Is there an injustice connected with the big boat, Dreoilin? Perhaps the captain has refused to sail it to Gaza?

Komodo – My Pimms is very bitter today, could do with some of your strawberries. Cheers!

£2.50 a punnet. Quite a fair price I thought considering what you pay for snacks at similar sporting events.

  • The CE

“Trust he is better at his banking than the S Korean 777 pilots are at flying.”

    ———————————————————————————

Wow, where the hell did that come from?

Mary is a truly terrifying combination of intolerance, bad taste and faux outrage.

And of course no withdrawal or apology when more grounded posters raise this. 🙁

  • Anon

Thanks for clearing that up, The CE. Komodo’s belly laugh will sound a little hollow now.

I should think Mr Salmond helped himself to several punnets at that price!

  • The CE

Yes, and my ticket I procured from the ballot was only £55 for a whole days play on Court no1.

Nowhere near as elitist as some of the tired old voices would have us believe.
