The last post raises an interesting point… the giving away of the Chagos Islands to the US for developing a massive air base was surely contrary to International Law. The historical record suggests that the pragmatic Harold Wilson may have done this very quietly as a sop to the US for UK not getting involved in Vietnam. But I’m sure that if the Chagos Islanders had held a referendum in 1970 (or whenever it was…) they would have voted for the status quo.

Cell phones are low power devices, they rely on there being a receiver nearby, that’s why they call them cell phones. They have an absolute maximum range of around 50 miles in absolutely perfect conditions. Inside the body of an aircraft it would most probably be considerably less.

Look I don’t know if the plane was equipped with on board wi-fi or on board phone system or not. I think it would be unlikely in that part of the world. If it was both could be easily disabled by the pilot at the flick of a switch.
Cell phones would definitely not work.

On the basis of the evidence so far, I should say that Anon has nothing to learn from Mr Scorgie when it comes to understanding politics.
Be that as it may, the Excellent Scorgie’s comment reminded me of something the Lefties always come up with.
It is this. Whenever one reminds a Leftie that a socialist govt has thoroughly messed up something, or left a dangerous legacy, the cry always goes up “Oh, but that government only called itself socialist, it wasn’t socialist at all!” And the same applies to the leaders of socialist parties or govts: they all disappointed, or fucked up, because they weren’t really socialists at all!
Socialism, therefore, can do no wrong, and never be wrong, for the simple reason that is had never been practised in government.
