    Sly and deluded Guardian editorial on Scottish independence
    Posted by The Medialens Editors on September 13, 2014, 7:27 am

    Nailing their editorial colours firmly to the ‘No’ camp, the paper pathetically pleads ‘Britain deserves another chance’.

    What is particularly sly is the conflation of independence with ‘ugly nationalism’, notwithstanding a token reference to ‘socialists, greens and other groups’. The paper has a second bite at the cherry when it makes the nasty claim that ‘a coded anti-English prejudice can lurk near the surface of Alex Salmond’s pitch’.

    http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/sep/12/guardian-view-scottish-independence

    Ironically, one of the Guardian’s own columnists, Suzanne Moore, had a piece published two days earlier that inadvertently preempted the nonsense now spouted by her paper’s own editors.

    ‘The language of the no camp – Westminster, bankers, Farage, Prescott, the Orangemen and Henry Kissinger – is innately patronising.’

    To which we can now add the Guardian.

    She continued:

    ‘Do not give in to petty nationalism, they say. Just stick with the bigger unionist nationalism; it’s better for you.’

    That about nails it.

    Michael White is on Sky News reviewing the papers. The usual barbs and stings and a lot of vitriol about Alex Salmond including repeating commentary from the Mail. He is Rusbridger’s very own Mr Nasty.

  • Tim

    Still no answer to why Rusbridger’s wife’s eventual inheritance gives him an interest either way. If anything it only reinforces his interest in Scotland being prosperous, whoever runs it. If independent Scotland is going to expropriate foreigners then it will have trouble with the European Convention on Human Rights – unless the UK has left it before independence

  • Juteman

    @Richard,
    Land reform and ownership will be a major issue in the new Scotland.
    Why do you think Dan Snow organised his lovebombing? His father in law owns a huge parcel of land in Scotland. I hope these huge estates are broken up, and put to good use by local folk.

  • Isobel McAllister

    As land reform will be a major issue in Scotland after Thursday his wife’s inheritance will be subject to a very differen tax regime (I hope!)

    “The Scottish Government published a white paper outlining their proposals for what sort of country Scotland would be. The emphasis was on fairness and justice in a social democratic set-up. ”

    I have just been listening to some extremely arrogant and ignorant person on the radio. He was being interviewed because he said the SNP was going to nationalise BP. When asked about it he just laughed and said he’d lied just so he’d get interviewed on the radio, bragged about how clever he was conning the BBC.

    The real Yes campaign, studiously ignored by the mainstream media, is on the ground. At every meeting I attended Land Reform was a burning issue. The current feudal pattern of land ownership in Scotland will not long survive independence.

    “The real Yes campaign, studiously ignored by the mainstream media, is on the ground. At every meeting I attended Land Reform was a burning issue. The current feudal pattern of land ownership in Scotland will not long survive independence.”

    I live in a crofting county. There is no feudal pattern. Here the crofters, who want to, own their own land.

    Things could only get worse, Salmond would probably take our land so he could put windmills on it to power his trams in Edinburgh.

    ” The current feudal pattern of land ownership in Scotland will not long survive independence.”

    Didn’t the Russian and Chinese Communists have similar thoughts?

    If ‘owners’ of land cannot expect to own their land, who will own the land? Will it be the people, passed to the commons, with the corresponding tragedy waiting in the wings?

    Those are just details. The important thing is to seize the land from the rich bastards. We will set an example to the world with our people’s moorland. Collectivise the estates. A grouse for every worker!

    When the British Quo ( Kathy, let’s not honour them with the word status ) tell you they are your friend, you know what they mean, next day they are going to divorce your national bank from you on air, or in the case of Assad, arm him through their allies Russia and Iran against you.

    In my opinion Kurdistan will never be British Quo’s friend. Winston Churchill had a map of world oil resources by the painstaking geological surveys of the Victorian era. That’s why he asked for Mosul. Islamic State is a USUKIS creation as witnessed by the quasi simultaneous signing for the attack on Mosul by the US head nof intelligence, William Hague, Barzani, Jordan ( = Israel ).

    Why would USUKIS create a new war for Kurdistan, as they did before between Iraq and Iran? Why do people rape their own children? The friendship of the British is like being parented by a paedophile. They love you so much they want to totally dominate and humiliate you.

    Ask Scotland. They will vote YES even if they have to return to bartering pebbles in the stone age to be free from British Paedophile Quo.

    I am glad Mr Salmond was ruffled by Robert Peston about RBS, because RBS will not be able to withdraw their outrageous decision and an Independent Scotland will now be able to create a new National Banking System.

    Also Mr Salmond turned out to be a human, not a Zionist banking stooge. Good luck to you Sir on your day of Scottish Freedom.

    “The Observer was brilliant in the 60s and 70s.

    One of the editors was Donald Trelford. Relatives of mine are friends of his first wife whom he left. I came across this the other day. He is keen to propagate the human race it would seem.

    ~~~~~~~~
    ‘Former Observer editor Donald ‘where’s your troosers’ Trelford is a father again at 76. Third wife Claire, 51, delivered his sixth child, daughter Poppy, in Majorca, where they now repose.
    ‘The hospital administrators, who needed our dates of birth, flatly refused to believe my age until I showed them my passport,’ boasts The Donald.
    He is proud to have set two Garrick Club records: the oldest member to father a child and the one with the largest age gap between the oldest and youngest. Eldest child Sally is 49.’
    More gossip column stuff from Mary – does it really belong on this blog?
    My impression is that Mary simply HAS to keep posting (aka cuttin-and-pasting in her case). Even if, for want of anything more “political”, it’s garbage like the above.
    Get treatment, get a life, for Heaven’s sake.
    “Oh, so this is the secret of Scotland’s superior democracy is it: no election manifestos, no one to say what they’ll do when they have power.”
    “But how are people supposed to decide who to vote for? They’ll just vote for Salmond because he’s a good egg?”
    Canned spaghetti, how many times do you need to be reminded that the Scottish referendum is not about electing a political party.
    It’s about INDEPENDENCE for fuck sake.
  • Mary
    Today’s Guardian which is full of NO propaganda, carries a message from Rusbridger inviting readers to become ‘members’. Yet another of his money making initiatives. He is taking over a Midland rail goods shed opposite King’s
    place where you can pay a few hundred £
    to hear waffle from the likes of Charles Crawford CMG!
    I will find out the details. Habbabkuk might like to join up.
    Well, actually I wasn’t complaining but just asking you a question.
    The question was whether you would care to present a convincing case for why Zionists (or Theosophists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Freemason, Spiritualists or anyone else for that matter) should not be allowed to have a view on Scottish independence.
    In case that would have been too difficult for you, I put you another question which you could answer instead : would you care to present a convincing case for why Yessers in the referendum debate should not be allowed to have a view on Zionism?
    Off you go now: time to answer the question, Doug! 🙂
    It’s about INDEPENDENCE for fuck sake.
    Absolutely.
    It’s a no brainer! Make your choice Independence or, um, dependence? subservience? or total grovelling submission?
    The referendum’s got to be an elite plot to break up the UK, or how else could the vote have been framed so inanely.
  • david coventry
    @ Paul Rigby – Me too mate – it’s a bit depressing when all your youthful “pillars of truth” are destroyed, but there we go! We live and learn – I too am better informed than ever before.
    @ CAnSpeccy – The vote for independence is just that – It is not a vote for Salmond. If independence comes through, the hard work will then begin. Can’t you see the difference between voting for independence and voting for Salmond? He is merely a conduit for the breaking away of Scotland from Westminster. Hope he gets that.
