Israeli economics minister Naftali Bennett has claimed of Binyamin Netanyahu that “The prime minister is not a private person but the leader of the Jewish state and the whole Jewish world.” Really? Netanyahu is the leader of all the Jews in London, or California, or Ethiopia, who may never have set foot in his state?
This extraordinary remark by Bennett lays bare the fundamental flaw in the very concept of Israel. It is not a modern state, defined as a territory and comprising all the various citizens of whatever descent who live within it. It is rather a vicious racist construct, defined absolutely by race, refusing territorial limits, and with an aggressive theocratic overlay that claims tribal superiority over the entire rest of the world.

There was a huge outcry against Labour MP Paul Flynn who dared question whether it was sensible to send a strongly professed Zionist Jew as British ambassador to Israel, but when the Israeli government itself proclaim the political leadership of all Jews all over the world, it is a logical impossibility not to ask the question.
I wish nothing but good to all people, including all Jewish people, but by their increasingly hardline racialist approach, their unceasing encroachment on Palestinian land and their rigorous adoption of all the racist mechanisms of an apartheid state internally, I feat that the window of opportunity for a peaceful future for those Jewish people living in what is currently Israel is closing fast.
It must be universally proclaimed: there is not a single racial group in the whole world from whom worldwide racial claims of political allegiance, or an internal racially based legislative order, are acceptable. Bennett’s remarks are beyond the limit of civilised political discourse.

Let me say that Israel is about as nasty as any ‘state’ could ever possibly be. Racist genocidal, religious maniacs, they make the neighbouring Arab populations seem positively advanced, modern and progressive by comparision. It has long been and still remains an intolerable and outrageous situation and the crimes against humanity they have and continue committing, for which no amount of atonement or reparation could possibly assuage the guilt, they’ve surpassed even their nemesis, the Nazis in the sustained horrors they’ve perpetrated against the people of Palestine, and so long as the British state of which I am still a reluctant part thanks to that composite state’s treachery does not resound with condemnation of Israel, then I hold the British state and the fascist run United States, and other states who do not sever every single tie, diplomatic, military, trade and investment with Israel, as guilty as the immediate perpetrators who’ve led Israel abysmally right from the start of its existence from 1948 to the present day, by their actions, assuring, guaranteeing its future could only be one of turmoil and decay, destruction, if it does not change radically.
Let me say also that religious belief is now largely only the preserve of the insane or mentally defective, it has been outflanked by commonsense and rationality, but is used by those with no simple-minded or stupid religious beliefs to manipulate these foolish believers in such fairy tale nonsense as gods and big magic books of fairy tales. My parents were of mixed, one Catholic father, one Protestant mother, all the bitterness was on the Protestant side, my mother now 73 years old having older sisters who from the day she married in 1960, who, pressured by their Protestant but irreligious husbands, vowed to and did break off all contact with my mother, and still to this day, if still alive, would probably still harbour hatred of my family and of their own sister or sister-in-law, for the grave offence of marrying a Catholic, my father, now long dead. These quite insane attitudes were even then in the early sixities in decline, but are still actively stoked on occasion in the west of Scotland, and it is those who define themselves as Protestant and also curiously, for there is no explicable linkage there, Unionist too, I would call pseudo-English, who drive this irrational and divisive behaviour, which is a blight on this, on any society. There is no doubt these people are simply malicious but at the same time are being used to further ends they cannot even comprehend, which is to divide and thus rule.
Glasgow’s Gorbals in the fifties and sixties had very poor housing stock, but slum was not always an appropriate or just description for all of it, some beautiful, striking buildings existed, some large grand elegant houses, the finest architecture, subdivided and subdivided till they became rabbit warrens, but the immigrant Catholic families, often the poorest too (not to suggest that all Scotland’s RC minority are or were descendants of immigrants, many were indigenous, Catholicism was of course once the establishment religion in Scotland) lived cheek by jowl and in harmony in shared poverty in that period in the Gorbals, with the Jewish community also housed there as having no alternative, room-and-kitchen type accomodation and rents were cheap and they lived together in near perfect social harmony, notwithstanding the sometimes appalling conditions the mainly private landlords kept the properties and people in, they were united in poverty. Just to round the story for completeness, though a digression: by the late sixties and early seventies, with partial slum clearance and the expulsion of the people and their commmunities out to the soul-less peripheral estates near complete, the Gorbals (what was left) then became the home to many Asian, Indian and Pakistani immigrants and businesses for a few years before the wrecker’s ball cleared the whole area, for the construction of the by then already discredited vertical hell that was multi-storey life and for the mythic southern flank of the Glasgow inner-ring road, which was never built, the extension of the M74 to meet the M8 at Kinning Park, completed just last year serving the identical purpose to the inner ring road (box), but without the need to carve an eastern flank running north to south through the historic old town, from Alexandra Parade, down High St, past the Infirmary and Cathedral, cutting across London Rd and the Gallowgate, over the Clyde to meet with the similarly still-born southern flank that was intended to carve through the rubble of the Gorbals, the comprehensive demolition of that area already completed in premature anticipation of the dystopian nightmare the planners called progress.
Curiously enough my godparents at my own RC christening/baptism were our neighbours who were partly Jewish as the wife of the couple I later in childhood learned was Jewish and who had with her RC husband moved from the Gorbals at the same time as my parents in the early sixties and ended up again as next-door neighbours at their new respective abodes in the frozen outskirts, and thus as another mixed religion couple, there was a bond which lasted many years until this slightly older couple passed away both to cancer in the late 80s. I loved my godparents, I never even knew what being Jewish meant then as a child, but knew it was used by some few as a slur aimed at my neighbours, at which I bristled with anger, their boys attended the same catholic schools as me and my godmother was the kindest most loving woman after my own mother I had ever known, was there as a second mother, to salve a skint knee or bumped head, to take me and my brothers and sisters in after school when my dad was for a long time in hospital and my mother working part-time to keep a roof over our heads, we even wore hand-me-down clothes next door’s (Jewish) older kids had outgrown, one of whom once even used this fact to humiliate me and my brother in front of our friends, which hurt but that’s kids, and did not diminish that or any other of many kindnesses our neighbours, my parents friends, my godparents, had done for us, as I am sure, from the same altruisitic motives, my parents had done for them.
I criticise Israel because what it is doing and has done is objectively wrong, it is not anti-semitic to do so, that accusation is hurtful and rejected utterly, it is right, it is necessary, a duty to speak out. The moral is trite but be good neighbours. Palestine and Israel, circumstances plus connivers and schemers of every background brought you together, make the best of it, don’t be pawns for your leaders, your interests and theirs are in no way the same or even compatible. The only innocents in all of this are the Palestinian people so cruelly wronged over and again. If you want to continue to be racist monsters in Israel or wherever else in the world, and for whatever reasons, defending the despicable and degraded designs of Zionism, then hell mend you, there will be a counter-reaction, as you sow, ye shall reap etc. It won’t be pretty and you will lose everything, you’ve already discarded your own capacity empathy and by now have completely lost everyone else’s sympathy.

Recently I have looked closely at the UK’s 2012 and 2014 national Universal Periodic Review (UPR) reports (2014 is a voluntary mid-term one) to the Human Rights Council, mainly in respect of two subjects: torture (cf the letter to Theresa May); and the UK’s Overseas Territories.
