It Didn’t Happen 83

If you thought that Nicola Sturgeon repeatedly mentioned the waste of money – 100 billion pounds – on updating the Trident nuclear missile system, during the leaders’ debate, plainly you need to be committed to a state mental institution. It is unthinkable that Britain’s possession of nuclear weapons should ever be questioned on British mainstream media.

It is so unthinkable, that IT NEVER HAPPENED. Not one British mainstream media report of the debate mentions Trident missiles or nuclear weapons. A Google news search on trident missiles or on nuclear weapons throws up zero references to the leaders’ debate or Nicola Sturgeon in British mainstream media today. Not one of the broadcasters’ highlight packages repeated Nicola’s outrage at the country’s throwing away money on weapons of mass destruction when so many children are living in poverty.

The media manage to report the many polls and commentators that say she won the debate, while suppressing what she actually said.

So there is nothing to see here. Go back to sleep. IT NEVER HAPPENED. YOU IMAGINED IT. IT NEVER HAPPENED.

Seriously, is that not really, really sickening and deeply, deeply scary?

Bravo, encore! More, please. Britain can rig referendums till hell freezes over. The only way you’ll ever get out is to make yourselves sufficiently emetic that they puke you out. To that end, you must embrace all the most lethal threats to the British regime: development, peace, and an end to impunity.

Not just abandoning Trident, but renouncing use or threat of force as required by UN Charter Article 2(4), excepting only necessary and proportionate self-defense in full compliance with Charter Articles 46 and 51; not just anti-poverty but good-faith compliance with the ICESCR as implemented by the Economic and Social Council and enforced by the rights enumerated in the Santiago Declaration on the Right to Peace. Not just disarmament but justice for aggression, domestically and in the ICC. All of it has to be legislated and institutionalized in Holyrood as well, as the law must bind all levels of government.

    Make yourselves poisonous to them.

As Clark points out, Carr who is Chair of BAE Systems, has been inserted by Cameron into the BBC Trust as vice chair alongside the chair Fairhead of dodgy HSBC infamy.

I put the CAAT petition up on a previous thread. Unfortunately it is the type of petition where the number who have signed it is invisible.

Shameful as it is, there is no rationale for spending the £100billion on fancy submarines. It is just the membership fee for the club of 5 at the UN.

Indeed it is. Should change the name of the BBC to Bloody Biased … something or other.

Cleopatra, sigh. I was lucky enough to be reading English at Oxford but I didn’t know enough about sexual politics to understand the set text Antony and Cleopatra.

Or I didn’t want to know. The British people don’t want to know about the wars our leaders impose by their great fucking democracy on the innocent families of Muslim countries.

We can terrorise the rest of the world, but no-one is going to terrorise us. When will the world spit out UK PLC?

Which companies are going to profit from the new trident upgrade? Those who oppose powerful military complex come to a sticky end.

I like quoting Harold Pinter’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech.

‘It never happened. Nothing ever happened. Even while it was happening it wasn’t happening. It didn’t matter. It was of no interest. The crimes of the United States have been systematic, constant, vicious, remorseless, but very few people have actually talked about them. You have to hand it to America. It has exercised a quite clinical manipulation of power worldwide while masquerading as a force for universal good. It’s a brilliant, even witty, highly successful act of hypnosis.

I put to you that the United States is without doubt the greatest show on the road. Brutal, indifferent, scornful and ruthless it may be but it is also very clever. As a salesman it is out on its own and its most saleable commodity is self love. It’s a winner. Listen to all American presidents on television say the words, ‘the American people’, as in the sentence, ‘I say to the American people it is time to pray and to defend the rights of the American people and I ask the American people to trust their president in the action he is about to take on behalf of the American people.’

Patrick Haseldine. Exactly. Somebody should break the story of the missing nukes prior to the election. But they won’t. They may mention scrapping Trident briefly then back to business. But that story, with all its implications now that Cameron is planning war with Russia, should be a priority for anyone who believes in the safety of the United Kingdom (Russia’s current enemy number one).

    Mary,

Yes – Harold kindly sent me a signed copy, with a nice message. I framed it and put it on the wall.

BBC is naught but a propagator of the Establishment line in propaganda. This is sometimes done by omission of relevant news ,as shown by the Ukraine conflict
Propaganda is as powerful as heroin; it surreptitiously dissolves all capacity to think.
The conscious manipulation of the habits and opinions of the public by propaganda, is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of a country.

Most people have no idea that what we are fed by the news media is nothing more than a portrayal of what powerful interests want us to believe. That what happens to pass as education is as often as not mere propaganda. That what we learn in school may have very little or nothing to do with the truth. that what our parents teach us may be nothing more than an accumulation of their own personal biases, no doubt a rather subtle modification of what they were taught by their parents. Through such a process, governments and nations around the world wield control as to what their citizens, believe, value, and do.

How wonderful Craig. You were honoured.

He was dying from oesophageal cancer as you know.

I have just been watching his widow at the Chicago Humanities Festival. She tells of their visit to Kensal Green Cemetery when he chose his grave plot. He is surrounded by poets and writers.

    What evil.

‘Blair outlined plans in Parliament on 4 December 2006, to build a new generation of submarines to carry existing Trident missiles, and join the D5LE project to refurbish them.[8]

The first flight test of a D-5 LE subsystem, the MK 6 Mod 1 guidance system, in Demonstration and Shakedown Operation (DASO)-23,[9] took place on USS Tennessee (SSBN-734) on 22 February 2012.[10] This was almost exactly 22 years after the first Trident II missile was launched from Tennessee in February 1990.

The total cost of the Trident program thus far came to $39.546 billion in 2011, with a cost of $70 million per missile.’

How wonderful Craig. You were honoured.

Indeed; Pinter’s speech is both powerful and poignant, the poignancy deriving from the debilitating effects of oesophageal cancer on what was previously a strong, resonant voice.

I had the pleasure of hearing that voice in March 1975 at the Mermaid Theatre in London, at a poetry reading event in honour of Philip Larkin (‘High Windows’ had just been published). Being part of the audience which heard him declaim ‘This Be The Verse’ was unforgettable.

  • Trowbridge H. Ford

The BBC is just like all the media, publishing only what the real bosses want the public to hear.

Now it is concentrating on scapegoating Andreas Lubitz for the plot to get Europe behind Israel’s Mediterranean Dialogue.

We are told that the recovered FDR corroborates everything and more that the BBC et al. have already claimed, though there not even a photo of it, and it is hoped that further investigation of it will prove helpful, as if the lies have not already closed the case.

Still no identification of the nationalities of all the 150 people on the flight, though the DNA of all 150 has been established.

Why not then declare who they are, and their nationality, especially the 10 or so, apparently Spaniards, who were apparently investigating the plotters who caused the crash, and their murders?

  • Trowbridge H. Ford

Have found photos of the FRD on DM, but interesting that the indestructible orange box is only black, and the cylinder on top, containing its memory card, is gone.

Holyrood and Scottish MPs need do nothing more than comply with the law:

    http://www.icj-cij.org/docket/index.php?sum=498&code=unan&p1=3&p2=4&case=95&k=e1&p3=5

The Scottish peoples’ right of non-participation requires Scotland to withhold fiscal transfers in breach of UK’s
    paramount legal obligations.

No Scottish fiscal support for nukes until threat of nuclear attack is “off the table” in law. No Scottish support until disarmament talks are brought to a conclusion. No Scottish support until the UK puts its nuclear weapons at the disposal of the UN Security Council, as required by law.
