Americans, Irish, Uzbeks, Ukrainians, Pakistanis – They All Have More Balls Than We Scots 687

The fascist violence in Charlottesville was in defence of prominent public statues to those who fought to uphold slavery. History should not be destroyed, and there is a place for such statues in appropriate explained context in museums. But public celebration of advocates of slavery ought to end. People always throw off the monuments of their oppressors, and so they should. The statues should be removed from their prestigious positions.

Hardly anybody remembers now that O’Connell Street in Dublin was Sackville Street. You will scour Ireland with little success for surviving statues of British Imperial rulers and commanders – there were once hundreds. I found that Burnes Road in Karachi is no more. Uzbekistan and Ukraine are no longer dotted with great statues of Lenin.

Yet I live here in a city which still has a Cumberland Street, named after a disgusting war criminal who perpetrated long term and systematic atrocities on this very people whose capital city is desecrated by his name. Cumberland was a worse racist and an infinitely greater war criminal than Robert E Lee. Yet I hear not a whisper to echo the brave roar of Charlottesville. The imposed regime which crushed Scotland, outlawed its major language and much of its culture and tried to expunge even the memory of its history and native culture, is celebrated in the heart of the nation. Hanover Street, George Street, Rose Street, Princes Street. These vicious, arrogant, Scot-hating people really did crush Scotland’s spirit, to the extent we still cringe before them now they are long dead.

It staggers me that, after we have decades of an element of home rule by alleged Scottish Nationalists and an alleged Labour Party, when even the pathetic colonial status of the devolution settlement gives the power to rename a few streets, Labour and the SNP, as the minimum gesture of self-awareness and a tiny, tiny glimmer of self-respect, have not renamed Cumberland Street after Keir Hardie.

Yes, we have always suffered from a parcel of rogues in a nation. Yet we remain a parcel of cowards as a nation. The brave left wing demonstrators of Charlottesville, supporting the removal of Robert E Lee against the violence of the fascists, put us to deep shame.

Well Her Majesty has written to the President of Sierra Leone expressing sympathy for the loss of life in the recent Freetown floods, so that should help greatly.

Reports say that thousands of people are missing.

We extract diamonds, iron and aluminium ore and cocoa beans from their country. They have a negative trade balance. Look at the GDP of the poor people. 17Oth out of 184. We in the West ( and China too in all probability) are a disgrace.

        ‘Contributing factors

The severity of the destruction was exacerbated by a combination of factors. Freetown, a densely populated and congested city occupied by about 1.2 million people at the time of the disaster, resides at or below sea level, and is flanked by heavily-forested mountain ranges. It suffers from a long-term issue with poor urban development programs: “The government is failing to provide housing for the poorest in society”, said Jamie Hitchen of the Africa Research Institute, while noting attention to unregulated construction is only received after a crisis. The lack of enforcement of a moratorium led to the encroachment of flood plains by unorganized settlements and municipal works, resulting in narrower water passageways. In flooding events, Freetown’s drainage systems are often blocked by discarded waste, especially in the city’s more impoverished communities, contributing to higher levels of surface runoff.

The building of large residential homes in hillside areas and unrestricted deforestation weakened the stability of nearby slopes and incurred significant adverse soil erosion. Within a decade leading to the disaster, Sierra Leone lost approximately 800,000 hectares of forest cover – the country’s civil war, fought between 1991 and 2002, is also a cause of deforestation. The nation’s Environmental Protective Agency reported a reforesting mission in the region two weeks prior to the floods and mudslides which was ultimately unsuccessful.’

‘”The government is failing to provide housing for the poorest in society”, said Jamie Hitchen of the Africa Research Institute, ..’ As in the UK?

An interesting and perhaps relevant comment from Christine McKelvie

“In trying to draw parallels between Scottish history and the unrest in the US over its civil war legacy, he is deliberately stoking divisions of the past. That is foolish, irresponsible and wrong “

  • Muscleguy

There was far more to the Confederate rebellion than just upholding slavery. There was the continuing vexed issue of States’ Rights, an echo of what should be Devolved or Retained here in Scotland. It was also no accident that the flag is a saltire as it was also seen as a rebellion against Patrician New England behaving as they saw it like Old England.

Reducing the whole thing, the motivations of everyone who fought, to a single issue as you do is wrong and a distortion of history. I’m a bit surprised to see you do it Craig.

By all means consider removing them to museums, having not been to Ireland I don’t know what statues and portraits are in her museums but I would hope they have not airbrushed their history.

I have a problem with the tendency of modern youth to take one thing about someone and damn them and their works in totality as though the world exists only in the starkest of blacks and whites. I see a lot of that sort of thing on the American iconoclasts. That is not to back the Far Right but the counter protestors need to pull it back and keep themselves to due process instead of toppling statues themselves. Due process and democracy are supposed to be part of the bedrock of the Union after all.

“It was also no accident that the flag is a saltire as it was also seen as a rebellion against Patrician New England behaving as they saw it like Old England. ”

No it was no coincidence the flag was a saltire. The flag was originally designed based on a blue George Cross but after complaints from a man called Charles Moise, a man of considerable influence, that the cross was a Christian symbol and many people in the south, including himself, were not Christians it was changed to a saltire cross.

      • Republicofscotland

“According to Coski, the Saint Andrew’s Cross (also used on the flag of Scotland as a white saltire on a blue field) had no special place in Southern iconography at the time, and if Miles had not been eager to conciliate the Southern J**s, his flag would have used the traditional upright “Saint George’s Cross” (as used on the flag of England, a red cross on a white field).

A colonel named James B. Walton submitted a battle flag design essentially identical to Miles’ except with an upright Saint George’s cross, but Beauregard chose the diagonal cross design.”

      “state’s rights”.

It was the state’s rights to have slaves that was the primary vexing issue of the Civil War, with the issue of whether new territories admitted to the Union could have slaves or not.

There actually *wasn’t* far more to the Confederate rebellion than slavery.

Heck, even a couple of the State’s Declarations of Secession actually specifically cite slavery. (The braver ones that didn’t try to dissemble behind vague “independence” language).

Heck, even look at the Southern recruiting posters. “Northerners are coming for your women”. LOL. No, they weren’t. The war wasn’t about that. It was about slavery.

      • bob apposite

It’s not like the Founding Fathers didn’t see that coming from a mile away. They knew slavery might one day blow up – because the same arguments were happening in their day.

        Of course it’s about slavery.
The Founding Fathers predicted it and worried about it.
The Supreme Court knew it was coming.
Every North/South argument in Congress for 40-50 years before the Civil War was about slavery.

It’s 2017. This “it was really about something else” is stupid. No one can be that dumb in the face of all the historical evidence.

      • Xavi

Secession was unquestionably about slaveholders safeguarding their huge capital in human property. But the war aim of the North was not to free Southern slaves, as Lincoln himself explicitly said at the outset. Yet this idea of a deeply American crusade to free the slaves has become one of the great self-congratulatory myths of US history.

Here is John Lennon mercilessly, cruelly and viciously mocking disabled people.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdnrFUHdYpg

Just to think this man has an entire airport named after him. All this shows is that the entire British nation hates and despises the disabled and seek to lionize people who mock them.

This airport needs to be torn down immediately and anyone that travels through the Liverpool John Lennon airport are themselves as guilty as Lennon. Anyone that has ever used this airport should have all their assets sequestrated with the proceeds donated to the poor. Passengers (together with employees and flight crew) need to be publicly identified and shamed for their disgusting attitude toward the disabled.

In the past Lennon collaborated with Paul McCartney. McCartney is still alive and hence can be arrested for his association with this heinous person. Some people actually bought parts of their musical output. All buyers of the output of this hate filled man need to be identified – and all their assets seized with the proceeds once again donated to the poor.

Oh maybe (We can work it out) if not it might be (A hard days night). Will there be rumblings about this (Across the universe) probably not.

However some may feel the need to carry this story down (A long and winding road) and repeat it (Here there and everywhere). Some will agree others will say (Hello goodbye), however (All you need is love), lets not fret over (Yesterday).

Just (Imagine) how great the future could be, we may end up walking in (Strawberry fields forever), or it may take a (Revolution) but we can all get by (With a little help from my friends).

All the time Lennon was singing about peace and love he was a violent bully who knocked his wife around.

He doesn’t deserve to have a urinal named after him let alone an airport.

Sarah Champion is an Islamophobe who has engaged in a baseless smear against an entire cultural group within society. It is possible that Sarah Champion has been enabled in her prejudices by an out of date and out of touch judiciary who have locked up a number of people from a certain demographic for various sexual crimes.

That the British Judiciary cannot discriminate between a crime and an accepted cultural practice tells you all you need to know about this bastion of white privilege. Surely it is time to dismantle the entire legal system, hang all the judges and burn all the courts. Simple humanitarian concern is enough to justify this very reasonable step,

What is needed as a matter of urgency is a combination of peoples courts run by cultural Marxists and Sharia law courts run by respected Islamic scholars from Saudi Arabia. A couple of years of a justice system like this would put an end to white supremacy and white privilege forever.

    • Kempe

Champion wasn’t pointing the finger at all men of Pakistani origin but seeing as there have been nearly 30 cases* so far, all following the same pattern of Pakistani men abusing vulnerable white girls there clearly IS a problem that needs to be addressed. Sweeping it under the carpet as islamaphobic or not-PC isn’t the answer.

I think what’s happening in America is happening too fast to be a real grassroots development, particularly as Trump was only elected nine months ago. I think the Suffragette movement had been going twenty years before they chained themselves to railings, yet in America in only nine months it is reaching civil war pitch? I think it is all being paid for, agitated and steered by sinister forces.

It’s got almost everything a divisive force could want. Left v right; north v south; black v white; indigenous v immigrant. And pulling down statues from old orders must be useful to the New World Order. All they need now is to work in a bit more religion and class and it’ll be war on the streets. Those who believe they can dictate the course of chaos are nutcases, and hopefully it will end with their trials.

War criminal William Hague of the Nasty party that destroyed Libya was interviewed by propagandist Peter Hennessy on radio 4. The Nasty party arranged for the global economic melt down of 2007 to happen on the watch of Gordon Brown, who then used his knowledge of economics to re-finance our economy, leaving the profiteers to profiteer.

The fact that the Nasty party is still in power ten years later is no credit at all to William Hague. He is just a low-grade politician like Jack Straw who specialises in talking Northern homespun bollocks ( the word is on-topic, unless pedants are going to distinguish between bollocks [bad] and balls [good] ) while pretending to be entirely innocent of any rank lies or other political misdemeanours.

I wish I could find another way of expressing the sheer affrontery of lies and manipulation by the Nasty party in relation to the failure of its only intellectual idea, the market, other than the cuteness, pertness, designer- asymmetry, perfection of a pit-bull terrier’s genitalia. This government of Mrs May’s is a soft front for a Nasty party that wants to demolish all of the progress in Human Rights, Fair Trade, and Equal Opportunities that has been made in the last century since the end of WW1, by removing itself from its treaty with the EU.

We did not vote for a dismantling of civilised society Brexit, we voted for an expulsion of slime-bag Cameron Brexit. And slime-bag’s chief partner in crime was the afore-mentioned testicle William Hague.

Christopher Columbus, Crawl Back in Your Hole!
    by Gary Corseri / October 10th, 2007

Christopher Columbus, crawl back in your hole!
Take you Nina, Pinta and Santa Magreedier.
We know what you did in Hispaniola!
We watched silver helmets glint in the sun.
We saw you claim our island for Spain!
    Idiot!
    Look what you’ve done!
How many millions of lives lost,
    How many holocausts
    Would burn up the centuries
So you could fill your coffers with gold?

Christopher Columbus—take George Bush with you!
    Take them all—Lincoln and Washington
    And Jefferson, too.
None of them gave a damn about us.
    They said we were savages,
    They killed us for sport.
Ever read about Lincoln and the Black Hawk War?
If Lincoln wanted to “free the slaves,”
How come he didn’t give a damn
    About their red brothers?
    Jefferson pimped for “democracy”
But signed the Removal Act to defraud the Cherokees.
    And Washington—“Father” of his country?
Please! You’re killing me! Don’t make me laugh!

    Christopher Columbus—Genoa scum!
Take Ferdinand and Isabel—bane of the J^ws
Bane of the Moors, too, who gave Spain a culture.
Not like those crap-bags with their “kill one for Christ!”
    (You can leave Jesus behind,
But not him of the Popes, not him of their lackeys.
If you want to leave the sandaled carpenter behind,
We’ve got work for him, work with honor.
We’ve got to undo 500 years of your damned interfering:
We’ll re-plant forests and heal the sky.
We don’t know if we can do it.
You took the last kernel of our hopes and crushed it.
You took our hope away and gave us fear.
You took our hope—but not our courage.
Courage to resist you, even after 500 years.

We’re all under your boots now, your jackhammer boots.
You Nazi, you maniac—take your bloody history
Forward and backward and what have you got?
The Spaniards came and rode us like lamas—literally!
They climbed on our backs and whipped us till we dropped.
The French came looking for pelts.
They took more than they needed so they made
    Beaver-fur hats—a Parisian fashion statement!
The Anglos came and never stopped coming.
They slaughtered each other over our land.
    They never stopped slaughtering.
They made great speeches about freedom and liberty
While their vampirish mouths ran with our blood.

Christopher Columbus, crawl back in your hole!
Take your economy and your progress and
    All the appurtenances of “civilization.”
Take your death culture and your sordid manias.
We’re sick of you and your hypocrisies.
    And we’re gathering.

We’re singing the Ghost Song and dancing the Ghost Dance,
    Gathering on the hills when you shut your eyes;
    Whispering in your dreams
    And crying in your nightmares.

And howling as your towers fall,
    Your bridges buckle,
    Your levees are breached,
    Your schools implode,
And your children grasp you with their bloody claws.

Aznar working for Murdoch as a director of NewsCorp. That was his reward.

The BBC web pages have a report that UK salmon exports have jumped by 24%. Scotland accounts for over 96% of these salmon sales. It’s the second largest UK food and drink export after whisky. Yet the BBC refers repeatedly in the report as “British salmon”. The SNP has worked hard with producers for 10 years to improve Scottish food and drink exports with considerable success but gets no mention from the state broadcaster.

Exaggerating bad news about Scotland or creating fictitious bad news about Scotland, whilst Britishizing any Scottish success to knock Scots’ confidence is the cheap glue that holds the union together now. But cheap glue only works for so long.

    • Kempe

A lot of it is Norwegian anyway. As long as it’s processed and packaged in Scotland/Britain/Rockall or wherever it can be labelled as such.

Wasn’t talking about labelling. That’s another issue. Was talking about BBC reporting of “British salmon”. Of course if the exports of them had gone down 24% instead of up 24%, the BBC would have been referring to it as Scottish salmon.

However the criteria for deciding between the sheep and the goats is whether the individual associated partners with God, such as prophets or Holy men/women, or statues, ascribing to them supernatural powers such as omniscience and omnipotence which are exclusively owned by Him.

Obviously those who say there is no God are claiming themselves as equals to God in order to be able to deny Him. The universe, and perfect symmetry of reproduction all created themselves out of bits of interplanetary string.

The objective is always the success and integrity of the nation within those borders. The objective is inimical to globalised government, and very good luck to it. And I am wondering quite how peaceful the Scottish, (or UK) independence movements would be if the citizen were allowed – by right – to carry arms. The feelings run fully as high as they do with US nationalists.

The thing all Nationalism has in common is that they all believe that their Nationalism is different to all the other Nationalism because their people actually are superior while every other Nationalist just thinks they are superior. The Scots Nationalist believes their Nationalism is different because they believe Scots actually are morally superior and more egalitarian than the English and that every invention in the world was invented by a Scot.

          ” (66) A former U.S. intelligence officer recently alleged:

Most terrorists are false flag terrorists or are created by our own security services. ”

This self same former US intelligence officer, Robert David Steele, also claims there is a secret colony on Mars where kidnapped children are taken to work as slaves.

Many of the other examples on Zerohedge are of the same outstanding quality.

The Eiffel Tower is to be lit up once more. That will surely make any would-be terrorist think twice.

Tealights also. They are like kryptonite to jihadists.

    • Loony

      Is this true?

The chances of a faux pas are very high. Will they light it up in Catalan colors or Spanish colors? If you light it up in Catalan colors then you stand accused of undermining the unity of the Kingdom of Spain.

If it is lit up in Spanish colors then that is simply a kick in the teeth to a people struggling to free themselves from the yoke of Spanish tyranny.

Lucky I have a bulk-buy of tealights. Stabbings in Helsinki and Dusseldorf today.

In my opinion they are shooting off too early. You have to wait till your population has reached tipping point first.

Was James Kessler, the main organiser of the white supremacist march in Charlottesvile, also a big noise in the Occupy movement, as reported by the ‘alt-right’ media?

A simple question. Will the corporate media both ask and answer it?

    Maybe it’s bull. Maybe not.

I think what’s happening in America is happening too fast for an actual grass roots development, specially since Trump was just chosen nine months ago. I believe the Suffragette movement was going twenty years until they chained themselves to railings, yet in America in just eight months it is attaining civil-war pitch? I think it’s all being covered, agitated and steered by black forces.

Tbh…going the other way, there’s many a time when I pick up a newspaper and think that Fleet Street should be renamed Joseph Goebbels Avenue.

I wonder if British taxpayer’s money going in the guise of “Foreign Aid / Relieve” gets a mention.

That’s right the British Taxpayer funds terrorism.

      Nice!

Interestingly a certain Lobby has managed to get into the British news and media frequently that Britain funds Palestinian Terrorists.

      • Sharp Ears

They would be Hamas I presume as opposed to the Mossad/IDF/Shin Bet terrorists who enact their skills on the Palestinians.

          “What is terror?”

We think of it as an aggrieved person or persons who through actions and or words brings death, destruction and fear to their targets. Motivated by madness and vengeance, often jealousy and greed.

          That’s easy to understand!

However Terrorism has two sides, the aggressors and the victims.

Once perhaps this status quo was pardonable. No longer.

Every country in the world is a potential victim of terrorism, even the United States of America (as their POTUS) keeps telling us. He sees no irony in the fact that the US is not being targeted now because of its actions and its foreign policies.

Out of the top ten top military spending budgets of all countries in the world, the US is unsurprisingly the highest. (Unsurprisingly because it is the most insecure by virtue of only placing the most craven and insecure people in the top job)

But not only no. 1 out of 10, the US spending equals the total of the other nine in the top ten’s spending put together.

Raising Saudi Arabia to 3rd place or no.1 in non nuclear states.

The rest of the world did’t have to put up with the aggression dished up by the US, Saudi Arabia and Israel but we did.

          We are the willing victims.

          “What is terrorism?”

It is a person or persons, a State or States a Country or Country, a peace deprived world that allows the aggression to roll on and on( gaining greater momentum and inertia as it does). The global victims are a willing part of terrorism.

The UN, Europe, Russia and China could have faced the US and their proxies down, they chose not to. Now their lays little or no other route (navigated by the US) than a simple choice.

Permit the US to formalise its global hegemony or burn the earth to cinders.

The victims (hand in hand with the aggressors) have taken us to this place.
