Oh yeah, of course, I got confused by the pics! I get it now and recall that the posited play in Ramsgate was all about that. You think…? I mean, do you think that Kate McCann is akin to Medea? Which might infer that you think she ‘dunnit’? I don’t know enough about the case.

  • JimmyGiro

The magnetic profiles of ‘thinking’ can be mapped using modern techniques. Indeed, they can even reverse the process, and cause people to change their moods by manipulating the magnetic fields close to the scalp.
    .
It should be a research priority to make an infallible lie-detector, since police work and court scrutiny, is clearly unreliable.
    .
The technology has been around for decades, yet the will to change the means of scrutinizing peoples words, seems to be held hostage by the legal system that benefits so mightily by anachronistic methods.

Where is the show on in Edinburgh? I’m in Edinburgh for the summer and might try and catch it.

    @Jimmy
I think you’re right. They’ve already invented “Specs that can see right through you”
    .
“They’re just one example of a number of “social X-ray specs” that are set to transform how we interact with each other. By sensing emotions that we would otherwise miss, these technologies can thwart disastrous social gaffes and help us understand each other better. Some companies are already wiring up their employees with the technology, to help them improve how they communicate with customers.”

More at the link – I doubt if any of these things could be used in a court of law, though. Not yet anyway.

Don’t get too excited JimmyGiro, the ability to alter consciousness in the brain by magnetic reversals that disrupt the brain’s electrical signals has been tested at Porton Down in the late 80’s to no effect. It may be of use to reduce physical pain and is used in brain function research. As for reading or changing thoughts the same could be done by hitting the human head with a hammer.

  • JimmyGiro

    Mark,
    .
That was about strong applied fields, I didn’t find the links I wanted, regarding the field mapping helmets, so put that one up to show the potential.
    .
When the brain thinks, there are a myriad of tiny magnetic fields emanating from the regions of activity, which can be precisely mapped and correlated to the specific functional regions of the brain’s cortex.
    .
Since lying uses different parts of the brain than telling the truth, this activity should therefore be detectable.

  • Suhayl Saadi

Yeah, do let us all know when and where the show’s on, Craig, so we can help to get it sold-out! We could bring along the Argonauts, to boot!

the results given by such devices will be dependent upon their software. How can we trust that the software is giving honest output?
    .
If you’re going to support the use of such devices, you have to insist that the source code of the software is published, and that the installed software can be audited, ie that it actually corresponds to the source code.
    .
We already have this problem with proprietary vote-counting machines.

Gotit Jimmy thanx – Suhayl – Is Craig asking a question with his pictures? Certainly Kate McCann left her child alone which was wrong and that neglect poses questions which could consume this complete thread. Some starting points Suhayl and I’m sure you know both parents are doctors sworn to covet life.

These “emotional interpretation” devices will be hideously dangerous, even with fully disclosed software. People are highly diverse. Some people’s expressions or cranial magnetic fluxes are bound to be misinterpreted, and the more unusual the person is, the greater the risk.
    .
Hey, don’t think with the “wrong” bits of your brain, or the machine will “prove” you’re a liar!

  • dreoilin

I agree with you Clark. They couldn’t be used in court. I said “not yet anyway” because no doubt this stuff will eventually become more sophisticated …
I said “I agree” to Jimmy about “a research priority to make an infallible lie-detector”. It would save a lot of court time, if a genuinely reliable one existed.

  • Stanton Carlisle

I don’t get it Craig. (I don’t know anything about the play Nadira’s in). Why the photo of Kate McCann? Explain, please.

  • Suhayl Saadi

Stanton, ‘Medea’ is a classical Greek play. Medea boiled her own children in a cauldron. Medea was a beautiful, cold-hearted witch who enticed Jason, the Greek hero and Argonaut. Medea was from Colchis, now Georgia, daughter of the king of that country. Medea was Lilith, Delilah, Salome, Siren. Medea was It. But Kate McCann? Is she ‘Medea’? Did she kill her own child? That was what I was asking of Craig, i.e. whether or not he was suggesting that, a question to which he replied, one senses, with irony.

  • Stanton Carlisle

Ok, I’ve got it. Thanks, Suhayl. Lack of a classical education on my part. Medea definitely killed her children. Casey Anthony was indicted of felony murder in the death of Caylee Anthony but yesterday was acquitted and found only guilty of providing false information. Kate McCann has never been charged with murdering her child. And we can infer that Craig is very much of the opinion, but he isn’t directly coming out with it, that these two women are as guilty as Medea was of murdering their kids. Which, before anyone jumps down my throat, he is perfectly within his rights to do.

Thanks to Suhayl for the enlightenment.

    Oprah Winfrey’s Heart Broke

    .
Just heard on Sky News: “Oprah Winfrey has revealed how her heart broke when she interviewed Kate and Gerry McCann.” Great News! Oprah Winfrey’s dead! How did she reveal it though? In a seance? At the post mortem when her diaphragm was opened? This disgusting McCann couple at the very most charitable interpretation, left tiny […]

    Incredible Coincidences

On Thursday 30 April, this blog had 2,849 unique visitors. That brought the total number of unique visitors for all of April to precisely 74,000. The chances of that being an exact thousand are, of course, just one in a thousand. Which set my mind thinking on the following incredible coincidence of numbers in recent […]

Suhayl – when you hang the mouse cursor over a picture most times depending on the diligence of the author what is known a the ‘alt attribute,’ an alternate text for an image is displayed – useful text if no image appears and sometimes (but rarely) useful in identifying the image – give it a try.

  • Suhayl Saadi

Oh yes, of course, Mark, thanks, but because I’d assumed it was Craig’s wife, rehearsing her play, I hadn’t thought of doing that with this particular picture.

  • Strategist

I back you on most things, Craig, but not on inferring that Kate McCann killed her own daughter.
That’s a gross accusation, and you can’t back it up.
Neither of us can know for sure, but I’d say it’s 99% likely she did not.
I’d say – take this post down, it’s spoiling the site.

  • craig Post author

    Strategist,

Mmmm … your own degree of certainty rather puzzles me. You are quite right, I don’t know if one or both of the McCanns murdered Madeleine or not – but I do know what the Scotland Yard detectives believe, and I do know that at best, accepting every word of their own story, they are incredibly neglectful parents.
