Meeting Livestream 376

The Fringe Meeting at which I am speaking will be livestreamed on Saturday from 12.30 on IndependenceLive.

Meanwhile, Emily has started her own blog.

I had a busy day today moving a lot of stuff to move into my new home in Edinburgh tomorrow. But I must briefly comment on a fascinating opinion poll by IPSOS/Mori tonight, which puts the Tories on 32 and Labour on 29 UK wide – and astonishingly the Lib Dems UK score of 9% only just ahead of the SNP’s UK wide score of 8%, even though the latter is concentrated entirely in Scotland. One reason that SNP figure is so high is that IPSOS MORI weight by certainty to vote, and are predicting a much higher turnout in Scotland than England at the next election.

The scenario leading straight to independence – a Tory/UKIP coalition at Westminster and a crushing SNP victory in Scotland – is looking increasingly probable. One thing I do not rule out at all is a unionist Con/Lab coalition in Westminster after the next general election. There are almost no real policy differences between them, and if coalition becomes the swiftest way to satisfy personal ambition for power and money on both sides (the only thing that drives both parties), I so not think it is in the least improbable. We have seen Lab/Con coalitions against the SNP in Dundee and Stirling Councils, and they were extremely happy together during the referendum campaign. I do not yet see a Lab/Con coalition as the most probable outcome of the next Westminster election. But it is entirely possible.

Given that by the second page everyone has given up the idea of connecting to Craig’s original post, I wanted to flag a post that appeared on Charles Crawford’s site a couple of days ago about dealing with the media. Just in case there is still anyone here who still thinks he would be capable of maintaining a secret identity for more than 24 hours…

  • Mary

One of the four men arrested last week has been released without charge. The other three are still in custody, warrants having been obtained to keep them in detention for questioning. Is any outsider allowed to watch over their condition? Seems a long time to be questioned IMHO.

  • Mary

I appreciate what you wrote earlier Nevermind. We have had three years almost to the day of the disruption from the troll. He obviously is so deluded that although he would like to shut me down (he won’t!), he thinks it’s OK for him to continue to leave his pointless droppings here.

    ~~

Something I just heard. The G20 in Brisbane is costing the Australian taxpayers $500m. Just think of the good uses that amount of money could be put to.

    ” Check again, lightweight. ”

You’ve no shame, have you Kempe.

You presumably have checked and discovered that you were wrong when you claimed “BBC Arabic TV wasn’t Founded until 2008!” (that’s when it was relaunched).  The gracious thing would have been to apologise, but for obvious reasons you haven’t.

Also, you seem to have forgotten that you made your false claim to try and disprove my assertion that BBC Arabic TV supplied Al Jazeera’s  staff. Now you have conceded that point as if it was you who’d thought of it in the first place. Majestic chutzpah.

Furthermore, you keep repeating that Al Jazeera is owned by Qatar as though that proves it is independent of Western influence rather than the exact opposite.

And finally, you just ignore me pointing out that Wadah Khanfar, for 8 years the Director General of Al Jazeera, was exposed as being a CIA asset. It’s not too late to address this point, by the way. I would love to hear your spin – perhaps you’ll claim the CIA was only formed after he had resigned.

Go on, give us another laugh.

    The horrible torment continues.

Jerusalem child shot by Israeli forces loses eyesight
    Published 15/11/2014 13:33

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — An 11-year-old Palestinian child shot in the face by a sponge bullet during clashes in al-Issawiya on Thursday has been left blind in one eye, a local official said.

Member of a local neighborhood committee, Muhammad Abu al-Hummus, told Ma’an that Saleh Samer Attiyeh Mahmoud, 11, was shot in the face at close range by Israeli forces firing sponge bullets in al-Issawiya during clashes.

He was hit directly between the eyes, causing severe bleeding to his nose and the loss of sight in his left eye. The vision in his right eye is also severely damaged.

Resident Dissident 15 Nov, 2014 – 7:10 pm :“How long is a generation? Or is it ok not to respect the decision of the majority?”
From the article you linked to:

    FIRST SENTENCE:
“Alex Salmond has warned Yes supporters that Thursday could be their last chance for a generation to secure an independent Scotland.”
    SECOND SENTENCE:
“But the SNP leader also refused to tie his own hands or those of his successors, leaving the door open for another referendum within just a few years.”

And you wonder why most people on this blog accuse you of dishonesty rather than serious debate.

Before the referendum Alex Salmond told us that oil prices were going to average $110 a barrel and not go lower than $99.

This week Brent crude was selling at under $80 a barrel and it’s forecast to fall further.

The sums don’t add up now.

  • Resident Dissident

    A node

Perhaps your problem is that you are not honest enough to debate serious questions.

I can understand Slippery Alex not wanting to bind the hands of his sucessors – but even he recognises that there are good reasons for not repeatedly asking the same question to the same generation- or at least he did.

I have absolutely no wish to “shut you down”, Mary. You see, I’m a democrat and believer in free speech, including on forums such as this one. Can you – who started calling me a “troll” and a “disrupter” almost as soon as I started commentng on here – say the same?

  • Habbabkuk (la vita è bella)

    Republicofscotland/Robert Crawford

What is the logical connection between me subjecting commenters like yourself to critical examination and believing that I “hold sway in here”?

You see, I believe that no one should “hold sway” on here – but that also holds good for the Original Trolls and the purveyors of shoddy pensée unique (including “new” arrivals like yourself).

    Think about it.

Short film: Dr Mads Gilbert and Gaza (on Hamas and ‘terrorists’, Israel and apartheid)

    Published on 25 Sep 2014

What can now now be said about the massive Israeli attacks on Gaza summer 2014?
The Norwegian medical doctor Mads Gilbert was there at Al-Shifa hospital. In this 10-minute interview/essay by Truls Lie from Le Monde diplomatique (Scandinavia), Dr. Gilbert contemplates the attacks, what it means to be defined “a terrorist”, the united Palestinians, and why peace for all has to begin with Israel ending the suppression of the Palestinian people – and now lift the siege of Gaza.

Its puzzling why the mods allow the “israeli narrative” shills to rule the roost here, I have noticed they carry out a combined assault on any newbie truthsayer. Or did CMs mother come over as a refugee during the war, we all know about “sumner redstone” and his real allegiances.

What we already knew but here are the facts after four and a half years of the Koalition’s policies. I bet most of the government members employ tax advisers and lawyers.

Revealed: how coalition has helped rich by hitting poor
Study shows gains for wealthier half of population, delivering a blow to George Osborne’s claims on fairness
    http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/nov/15/coalition-helped-rich-hitting-poor-george-osborne

‘The report, to be published on Monday, claims that the cumulative impact of tax and welfare changes, from in-work benefits to council tax support, to the cut in the top rate of income tax and an increase in tax-free personal allowances, has been regressive across the income spectrum.

Its authors, Paola De Agostini and Professor Holly Sutherland at the university of Essex, and Professor John Hills at the LSE, write: “Whether we have all been ‘in it together’, making equivalent sacrifices through the period of austerity, is a central question in understanding the record of the coalition government … It is clear that the changes did not lead to uniform changes in people’s incomes. The reforms had the effect of making an income transfer from the poorer half of households (and some of the very richest) to most of the richer half, with no net effect on the public finances.

“In effect, the reductions in benefits and tax credits financed the cuts in taxes. Some groups were clear losers on average – including lone-parent families, large families, children, and middle-aged people (at the age when many are parents). Others were gainers, including two-earner couples, and those in their 50s and early 60s.”’
