Meeting Livestream 376

The Fringe Meeting at which I am speaking will be livestreamed on Saturday from 12.30 on IndependenceLive.

Meanwhile, Emily has started her own blog.

I had a busy day today moving a lot of stuff to move into my new home in Edinburgh tomorrow. But I must briefly comment on a fascinating opinion poll by IPSOS/Mori tonight, which puts the Tories on 32 and Labour on 29 UK wide – and astonishingly the Lib Dems UK score of 9% only just ahead of the SNP’s UK wide score of 8%, even though the latter is concentrated entirely in Scotland. One reason that SNP figure is so high is that IPSOS MORI weight by certainty to vote, and are predicting a much higher turnout in Scotland than England at the next election.

The scenario leading straight to independence – a Tory/UKIP coalition at Westminster and a crushing SNP victory in Scotland – is looking increasingly probable. One thing I do not rule out at all is a unionist Con/Lab coalition in Westminster after the next general election. There are almost no real policy differences between them, and if coalition becomes the swiftest way to satisfy personal ambition for power and money on both sides (the only thing that drives both parties), I so not think it is in the least improbable. We have seen Lab/Con coalitions against the SNP in Dundee and Stirling Councils, and they were extremely happy together during the referendum campaign. I do not yet see a Lab/Con coalition as the most probable outcome of the next Westminster election. But it is entirely possible.

“The group is alleged to have included senior figures in public life, the military, politics and law enforcement. In a statement Scotland Yard said inquiries were at an early stage.”
    ……………

Senior military, senior politicians, senior coppers…

I’m sure the security services will ensure little evidence will come to light.

It is interesting though, that a related homicide is being “looked into” by the police.

    Avnery sets the record straight.

    A Killing at Kafra Kana
    Wine, Blood and Gasoline
    by URI AVNERY

    14 November 2014

Kafr Kana, a village near Nazareth, is probably the place where Jesus – according to the New Testament – turned water into wine. Now it is the Arab village where the Israeli police is turning stones into blood.

On the fateful day, the police was confronting a group of young Arabs protesting against the Israeli efforts to change the status quo on the Temple Mount (known to Muslims as “the Noble Sanctuary”). Such demonstrations were taking place that day in many Arab towns and villages all over Israel, and especially in occupied East Jerusalem.

According to the first police statement, the 22-year old Arab, Kheir a-Din Hamdan, attacked the police with a knife. In self defense, they had no choice but to shoot and kill him.

As so often with police reports, this was a pack of lies.

‘The group is alleged to have included senior figures in public life, the military, politics and law enforcement. In a statement Scotland Yard said inquiries were at an early stage.’

At least you are getting an investigation.

That’s more than we get in Scotland.

  • Skotskinorge

Kempe – I think you’ll find that dozens of BBC employees have resigned over the years at what they perceive as bias. Since you sound like a defender of the good old British media, why not give me one example from the past 70 years where the BBC has openly criticized the Queen? You won’t find it, but – then again – you’ve never thought to look for it. You’re typical of so much of the so-called Left in Britain today. Blinded by the very propaganda you claim to fight. There is not one shred of evidence linking Putin with these deaths. Your favourite rag, The Guardian, is no longer a credible source. By the way, who killed Jill Dando? And for that matter, Dr. Kelly? And Diana? And Robin Cook? Focus your energies on your own country, before sticking your arrogant nose in the business of countries you know nothing about.

  • glenn_uk

@Skotskinorge: Jill Dando – I thought perhaps it was Serbs. After all, enough of their journalists had been killed. On Diana – it seems that if you hang around with playboys who like having their alcoholic drivers do well over 100mph through the streets, it puts you at quite a bit of risk.

Incidentally, the BBC did report on criticism of the Queen for her (lack of) reaction to Diana’s death. They’re not supposed to actually take positions themselves, just report what’s going on, remember. I don’t think you’ll find many examples of the BBC – itself – actually criticising anyone.

But Kempe isn’t a “leftie”, actually s/he appears to be more of an establishment-based contrarian.

All the same, keep writing – I like your enthusiasm.

  • nigel

Serial killer Angus Sinclair has finally been put behind bars. (He is Scotish, in keeping with the relentless focus of this once interesting blog.)

When oh when will the British Establishment accept responsibility for these crimes, and do the right thing? And why have none of the usual suspects here blamed The Establishment yet?

    Reluctant observer

(The yorkshire ripper was Inglish.) Whats your point?

  • Habbabkuk (la vita è bella)

Skotsinorge huffs (in Kempe’s general direction):

“give me one example from the past 70 years where the BBC has openly criticized the Queen?”

While waiting for Kempe’s reply, perhaps Skotsinorge could just give us a few names to back up his assertion that:

“you’ll find that dozens of BBC employees have resigned over the years at what they perceive as bias.”?

    Thanks.

  • Habbabkuk (la vita è bella)

“Besides journalists that upset Vladimir tend to have more than their employment terminated.

    ______________________

And that’s the point, isn’t it.

Perhaps Skotsinorge – as a sort of entry fee to this blog – could give us the names of a couple of British journalists who have had their employment terminated à la Putin?

Just a couple, laddie. Off yer go!

  • Habbabkuk (la vita è bella)

Isn’t it curious how the departure of one obsessive malcontent from this blog (Macky, for example)is always balanced by the arrival of another (Skotisorge, for example)?

    Surely this blog deserves better?

  • Habbabkuk (la vita è bella)

    Mary

I’m sure you’ve seen and read Skotsinorge’s intemperate attack on Craig at 18h59.

Do you agree with Skotsinorge’s comments?

If not, why have you not responded to defend Craig against Skotsinorge’s accusations?

Could it be that you secretly share Skotsinorge’s opinions on Craig?

  • Porkfright

HabbaBarleyWine-I am most surprised you have not made fun of Skotsinorge’s U/N, since that seems to be about the only thing you exhibit any talent for. You certainly make newcomers very unwelcome with your doubtful contributions. Your constant questioning reminds me of a very incompetent Attorney I once knew. A sort of peripatetic Perry Mason, you. Or peripathetic, even.

  • Tony M

I think Reluctant Observer should observe rather more closely and with more enthusiasm, it might help him avoid shooting himself in the foot. I’m sorry that you think Scotland is of no importance or interest to you, but to some it is of great importance. I suspect you have a ticklish case of terminally dull anglo-centrism, and it’s incurable and quite horrible in the end I believe. Try opening your eyes wider, there’s a bigger picture out there and emerging democracies are far more interesting, representing the future, than the final days of the stagnant Westminster and City -all that’s there to be seen is panicked looting and attempts at destruction of damning evidence of the outgoing old order’s heinous crimes and scams, with shredders working beyond their recommended duty cycle, smoke rising from the overheated motors, for fear of the reckoning that’s coming quite rightly stalks the once high and mighty. You might find it unappealing to see the last stranglehold and the collective victims of your beloved Empire freeing themselves from their oppressors, but rUK will finally have to stand on its own feet however unsteadily as till now drunk on power, but life will become incomparably worse there for the many as there will be no more easy-pickings as before, the cake just keeps getting smaller and the greedy hands of the few will still insist on their undue ‘share’ unless England’s people act decisively and stop them, get aboard and help smash the system, but this looks unlikely, enough of the besotted saps having had it so good for so long, the idea of it all coming crashing down, of them, the little people of the elite caste joining the vast pool of despised slaves once again is inconceivable.

I am fairly certain that murderer Angus Simpson was already in jail convicted of other previous murders, and not as you say “finally put behind bars”, this was his second trial for the World’s End murders, re-trial in the light of significant and powerful new evidence was made possible by the the removal of double-jeopardy law. It is quite right that past unsolved cases are periodically re-examined in the light of new information, scientific advances, or other changes, or indeed simply due to the fact that fact they are, as yet unsolved. Do you have a problem with that? As your particular ‘obsession’ rather alarmingly is serial killers, it’s surprising you’re so woefully unfamiliar with the basic details of the case in question; can I suggest this is not the blog for you, but I’m sure there are other places or sites existing which do cater to your esoteric and questionable tastes, where you might find yourself in more agreeable, like-minded company.

    Bad luck for Philae.

Rosetta mission: Philae goes to sleep on comet as batteries run out
Lander rotates into slightly sunnier position but apparently too late to charge batteries and keep systems running
    http://www.theguardian.com/science/2014/nov/14/rosetta-philae-lander-hop-comet

What is the total mission cost?
The total mission cost of Rosetta is close to 1.4 billion Euros of which the total Philae costs are 220 Million Euros (in 2014 economic conditions) including expenses for the one year launch delay. The mission cost covers development and construction of the spacecraft and all of its instruments, including the lander, together with launch and operations. http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Space_Science/Rosetta/Frequently_asked_questions

  • Kempe

” Kempe – I think you’ll find that dozens of BBC employees have resigned over the years at what they perceive as bias. ”

Well I can’t think of any but we weren’t discussing bias at the BBC but at RT. If you want to discuss the former fine but it’s the same old argument “you can’t criticise what they do because somebody else is worse” that we’ve had on here before. It won’t work; however bad the BBC might be doesn’t excuse the obvious bias at RT.

Have many pro-Putin journalists died in odd circumstances?

  • Tony_0pmoc

    ‘Obama warns of Asia ‘intimidation’
US President Barack Obama, who is attending the G20 summit in Australia, says Asia’s security must not be based on intimidation and bullying. ‘
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-30066579

The US/Obama are of course not guilty of intimidation and bullying, guilty only of waging illegal wars and extrajudicial killings.

  • Mary

The Mail has packed this anti-Putin piece with numerous images of red, white and blue flags which were used as backdrops for Obomber. The hypocrisy is gross.

‘Russia’s aggression is a threat to the world:’ Barack Obama wins over an excited crowd in ‘Brisvegas’ with his Australian lingo but still talks tough on the ‘appalling’ shooting down of MH17

The U.S. President Barack Obama spoke at the University of Queensland in a much-anticipated event at the G20
Mr Obama had the crowd in stitches when he referred to the Queensland capital as ‘Brisvegas’
He also said he was disappointed he only ever got to see Australia from inside ‘conference rooms’
But he issued a warning to Russian president Vladimir Putin that the U.S. was standing behind Australia’s quest for justice over the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines MH17
He also urged Australia to take action on Climate Change, after the U.S. and China signed a historic deal to fight it

Doug You don’t have to know politicians in high places but it helps. Remember Prescott?

‘AEG also owns the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, StubHub Center in Carson, California and the multi-purpose arena known as “The O2”, formerly the Millennium Dome. AEG operates The Sprint Center for the city of Kansas City, Missouri, and Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Anschutz’s investment in the Millennium Dome in London, (through his company Anschutz Entertainment Group now The O2) previously resulted in his involvement in controversy related to the possible influence of former British Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott in the award of the “super casino” license by the British government. Anschutz knows Prescott personally, having had him as a guest for a two-night stay at Anschutz’s ranch in 2005 and footing the bill for hospitality and gifts.[13]

In January 2007, the “Super Casino” license was awarded to a group in Manchester, rather than to Blackpool or London.[14] Anschutz spent £50m on the Manchester Arena and the winner of the casino licence is a close ally of Anshutz, Sol Kerzner.’

I have told you before not to include me in your accusatory trouble making shit-stirring ramblings.”
    _____________________

Well, you see, the reason I asked you why you had not leaped to Craig’s defence in the face of the accusations from Skotsinorge was that when Craig was not well once you very quickly asked me why I had not offered him my sympathy and get-well wishes.

So it just seemed curious to me that when Craig was now under a different sort of attack you were strangely silent.

Or, of course, it could be that you agree with Skotsinorge’s strictures, in which case I could understand why you would wish to lie low.

The way to avoid questions like the ones you seem to have taken exception to is to be a little more polite and a little less agressive with your own posts, Mary.

  • Habbabkuk (la vita è bella)

Reply still outstanding from the suddenly silent Skotsinorge:

““give me one example from the past 70 years where the BBC has openly criticized the Queen?”

While waiting for Kempe’s reply, perhaps Skotsinorge could just give us a few names to back up his assertion that:

“you’ll find that dozens of BBC employees have resigned over the years at what they perceive as bias.”?”

Come on, chop chop! Just a few names (not all of them)!

  • Habbabkuk (la vita è bella)

And another reply still outstanding from the elusive Skotsinorge:

““Besides journalists that upset Vladimir tend to have more than their employment terminated.

Perhaps Skotsinorge – as a sort of entry fee to this blog – could give us the names of a couple of British journalists who have had their employment terminated à la Putin?”

If the answer is “none”, Skotsinorge, don’t be afraid to say “none” – we shan’t eat you!

Habbabkuk: Would you not agree, however, that Mary deserves a long-service medal in the War against Mass Deception? See for instance her useful reminder at 4.17 pm on 13 November of Blair’s War against Madcow Disease.
