A Hard Night 284

I can’t pretend not to have been disappointed by the Clackmannanshire result, especially as I am here with some wonderful people who have put months and years of their lives into campaigning heart and soul.

But the count was fascinating. Professional Conservative, Labour and Lib Dem politicians working and socialising together and dressing the same. Tory ladies in pillar box red clothes and Lib Dem councillors in Labour Party rosettes. All braying and congratulating each other in the same voices, and looking smug and very happy together.

We are not winning tonight’s battle at the moment, but the battle lines have now become clearly defined between the single establishment of the media and all the political parties, and almost half the people – so far who want an alternative political structure. This is a stage in a process, and in its clarity and scale a major advance.

    Seize the day, people! Give us somebody we can support in the 2015 general election without wasting our votes!

    Better still, give us a single simple important issue which people can understand without a 1:1 PPE from Oxford. Power to the regions will do. That’s the way the tide is running. If Mr. Farage would kindly shut up about immigrants and the EU, he’d be the bellwether for that. Ducks in a row, Mr. Farage, please. A single-issue platform will get you in, with enough momentum to shift whatever the ruling party happens to be.

    On this clement and sunny morning,

    a BIG welcome back to “SOFIA” (shorn of his “Kibo Noh”)

    and

    a THANKFUL adieu to Holocaust-denying “REPUBLICOFSCOTLAND” !!

    🙂

    What the other people in the video were doing I haven’t a clue and neither have you. You have no evidence, all you have is a disregard for democracy.

    Don’t you think what the wifie shuffling forms from her Yes pile to her No pile might at least be investigated? To ensure democracy is seen to be done?

    God knows what the lad with the pencil was doing, but he looked to me as if he wasn’t too keen on people watching him. Looked like a fecking shoplifter.

    To use a familiar trope, if they’d done nothing wrong, they had nothing to fear from being investigated, eh?

  • Ba'al Zevul

    And now you’ve spotted my deliberate mistake, Fred –

    …Yes pile to her No pile…

    simply exchange Yes and No.

  • Ангрысоба

    Tony M: Les Wilson, that video is stunning, what is that woman doing switching the bundles, and who is that guy sitting at one of the counts, filling in ballot papers himself.

    This is just silly.

  • fred

    By all means find out what the wifie was doing, we’d all like to know. But don’t go declaring the result of the ballot null and void until you have found out, to ensure democracy is seen to be done.

    Why were ballot counters wearing dayglo jackets? Were there a lot of lorries reversing through the election centres? Or maybe he wasn’t even one of the counters, just some kid writing something on a piece of paper.

    Go to the Electoral Commission and ask them to investigate if you think the ballot was rigged. Ensure democracy is seen to be done.

    “Turns out that the spooks did better than I expected.”

    Considering you were predicting they would blow up a volcano in Iceland with nuclear weapons it’s hard to see how this has topped that.

  • Tony M

    Any and all scraps of video footage and photos from any counts must be preserved.

    The physical ballots must be secured, though they will have already been irrevocably tainted before and during the counts, they have already for many hours been in the possession of and control of Labour, Tory, Liberal run councils, or combinations of these parties. They should and must be impounded as potential future evidence, there is no reason these cannot be taken now, as a precautionary measure into the securest most trustworthy and impartial hands, overseen perhaps by churches and the police, perhaps with help from the NHS too, there is no sound reason to leave the ballot papers in the physical possession of those in local government, allied by patronage and favour to those who had the motivation to tamper, a past history of it and who stand to gain from it.

    The woman is at it, and may not have been the only one doing the same, the woman sitting right next to her could not have been unaware what was going on, and is likely involved too.

    If there is any doubt and there is plenty, the vote must be taken again.

  • Juteman

    Project fear played a blinder. They targeted the old folk, and it worked.
    The demographics show that it was the over 55’s that voted No. The over 65’s voted only 27% Yes, whilst the 16-17 year olds voted 71% Yes. The 18-24’s (uncertain job seekers and graduates) voted 48.6% Yes, and all other age groups showed a majority for Yes.

  • Tony M

    Identify that guy in the video, and by fingerprints find the votes he has entered into the system.

    What a scunner.

    I see the usual suspects are out in force, gloating over the broken dreams of those who aspire to a better world. I’m not hanging around here to be a target for their bile. Let them have the blog to themselves for the rest of the day – they’ll find they don’t like each other, bitterness is all they have in common.

    Tomorrow’s another day. We’ll begin again.

  • John Goss

    “The video showed me a ballot paper with a cross in “Yes” on a table marked “No” and told me it was proof of ballot rigging.”

    It showed a lot more than that. Are you being deliberately obtuse or what?

  • Trowbridge H. Ford

    Never said anything about nuclear weapons, only the use of specall attack submarine lasres on the floor of the sea bed where the plates joined to cause a serious earthquake, if it proved necessary – what GCQH proved unnecessary by determining the voting before the polls even opened.

    Bye, bye, and this time I really mean it, as the site is just is just dominated by trolls with closed minds.

  • fred

    “It showed a lot more than that. Are you being deliberately obtuse or what?”

    The video lied.

    The video deliberately tried to deceive.

    What the video said was happening and what was actually happening were not the same thing.

    Do you understand yet? I can’t think of a way of making it any simpler for you.

    To be honest, the CTers are just making themselves look silly. Every bit as silly as the No side would have looked if George Robertson really had been designated as their complainer-in-chief (which he wasn’t). However, the result shows that Craig’s boast about it being easy in Scotland to discover what is happening through family and social connections was just waffle. There was an election. One side won. One side lost. That’s the way it is.

  • FieldingGray

    I understand why for those who are on the losing side it might be tempting to take refuge in the thought that this was a rigged vote. And if the margin had been similar to that of Quebec and something like 49.5/50.5 etc then that would have been a big problem and cause for further dissent etc.

    But it’s a 10% margin! Granted even if the above individual examples are fraud then it can just be part of the inevitable truth that there will always be fraud/human error somewhere as 100% accuracy cannot always be guaranteed.

    But even if that is the case, again I say a 10% margin. Just think the level of organisation and conspiracy that would require. The 100s of people who would have to be actively involved for that level of fraud to be accomplished and then be guaranteed to not reveal anything afterwards. And it would all have to happen under the very watchful eye of independent observers including of course the Yes Campaign. And indeed, people like Craig Murray who is not going to let such things go unnoticed on his watch.

    Rather, I would hope that whatever side you’re on – and however real your disappointment – let’s at least rejoice in this amazing show of democracy today. A huge proportion of the world has been watching this with utter astonishment. Authoritarian regimes from Saudi Arabia to China cannot believe that a government would allow its people to actually voice such dissent on such a wide level. We should never forget that and never stop giving thanks for democracy. Yes it’s flawed but nobody has been carted off today to a gulag. Nobody has been silenced. Nobody has been disappeared.

    It’s a flawed old thing and mistakes happen. But by God I just look at the alternatives and give thanks for what we have witnessed over the past two years…

  • Ba'al Zevul

    By all means find out what the wifie was doing, we’d all like to know. But don’t go declaring the result of the ballot null and void until you have found out, to ensure democracy is seen to be done.

    And don’t go accusing people of a disregard for democracy without evidence. Cuts both ways, Fred.

    Why were ballot counters wearing dayglo jackets?
    Also possibly a good question. From either POV. Though I can imagine a scenario in which an interloper wanted to look as ‘official’ as possible, and dayglo jackets fulfil that function for some. Still, I’m guessing that that will indeed be going to the Electoral Commission, and we’ll see who’s right.

  • Tony M

    Nothing to see here then move along? It has been rigged to hell and back. I’ll give thanks for democracy when finally get we see it, not just an illusion.

    “Under the USSR dissenters were branded as mentally ill”

    A practice that supporters of the USSR seek to replicate to those dissenting to general stream of predictable drivel from many of the commenters here.

  • Ba'al Zevul

    Authoritarian regimes from Saudi Arabia to China cannot believe that a government would allow its people to actually voice such dissent on such a wide level.

    They can’t believe that a government would allow the dissenters to win, and I’m having trouble with that myself. BTW do pick up a copy of this week’s Private Eye for extensive detail on our government’s happy relationship with Saudi Arabia, and what happens to whistleblowers.

  • John Goss

    “What the video said was happening and what was actually happening were not the same thing.”

    The woman was deliberately putting YES votes into the NO pile. Are you blind as well as simple?

    You really are a silly bugger, aren’t you.

    I don’t see much gloating from those commenters who wrote in favour of a No vote but I do see a lot of bollocks from the Yessers about ballot rigging, etc.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    And don’t flatter yourself that you’d be a target for anyone’s “bile” – bile is in limited supply and I don’t imagine anyone would wish to waste theirs on twits like you.
    What difference will this no result make to the UK overall?…I’ll tell you.. NONE what so ever. Just listen to Cameron, Clegg, Milliband and the rest of the establishment puppets they just got the approval they need to continue with the same old same old agenda.
It’s a YES vote !! . . . Fuckers !! Check out other stories on his site . . . woman sorting votes on a video, putting “YES” onto the “NO” pile & an article on people turning up to vote and finding their vote had already been cast. Police looking at 10 cases spread all over the country. I guess nobody thought they’d make it out to vote so someone (???) did it for them . . . wasn’t that nice of them eh ?!?! . . . . again . . .
